Is the round of 16 draw seeded? I see Inter Miami is not getting a bye, so Messi is a potential opponent. I'd rather have a Caribbean team that we have a better chance against, but it would be pretty sweet to see Messi playing against Cavalry.
Imagine 60000 Vancouverites paying hundreds of dollars to watch Messi play Cavalry, and he doesn't show again. Would fund the club for a couple years....

From the list, venues will be expanding through 2025. That Alexandria one is weird though...some random HS?
As with most things Fifa, though it has to be a little more overt nowadays, $ talks. And then, second round is enticing a particular national federation to choose, money also involved there as well.
As discussed, training at altitude would be somewhat of a differentiator for Calgary (but, also Denver and other spots). No idea (outside of facilities, treatment facilities, security etc) what goes into a desirable choice for national teams for the amount of time they are here.

Yes, the article says that the list will be expanded further in 2025, and that options in both Canada & Mexico will be added.
Pure speculation of my part, but I think this works in Spruce Meadows favour. I think that there will be some political pressure to have at least one team to have their base camp in Canada, and it may turn out that the team that could be under the most pressure to do so might be Canada itself.
I can't think of any facilities in Canada that would compete against what we have here: grass pitch, altitude, plenty of hotel rooms within a 30 minute drive, major airport, approximate 1 hour flight to games played Vancouver, Seattle, not too far away to games played in SF, LA, KC, Dallas, Houston & Toronto. Mere speculation on my part, but that's how I'm reading the tea leaves.
The problem with Spruce could also be the single pitch and things such as dressing room and workout facilities. Any time I've seen pre World cup videos, teams seem to be in a complex. A handful of pitches. Most top Euro teams practice facilities have multiple pitches and workout, physio, cafeteria, all in the same complex.
Obviously the fields aren't Fifa standard but MRU has a couple grass fields and proper indoor dressing rooms, workout facilities and the ability for teams to setup recovery facilities and whatever else they need, inside, a short walk away on campus. That's better than Atco trailers as at Spruce or makeshift semi oermant things they'd have to setup in the various buildings around Spruce.
A lot of the US places on that list are University campuses, becuase again, they have the existing expanded required athletic facilities all self contained.

Yeah, I would imagine the sports facilities at schools like LSU, Texas, Penn State, Michigan are etc slightly better than Spruce Meadows. All the teams will charter their own planes, so size of the airport doesn't really matter.
Alas, it would have been cool to host even a minnow here.
Roster updates are out. The big surprise is Akio being released from his contract. Guessing they got tired of him going to the bar...
Quote:
Eleven players have guaranteed contracts through the 2025 season: goalkeeper Marco Carducci; defenders Fraser Aird, Bradley Kamdem and Eryk Kobza; midfielders Sergio Camargo, Diego Gutierrez, and Charlie Trafford; and forwards Chanan Chanda, Nicolas Wähling, Tobias Warschewski and Lowell Wright. Warschewski’s contract was guaranteed after he achieved a performance goal that automatically triggered his 2025 Club Option.
Cavalry holds club options on eight players and has until Dec. 31 to trigger those options for 2025: goalkeeper Joseph Holliday; defenders Michael Harms and Callum Montgomery; midfielders Jesse Daley, Maël Henry and Shamit Shome; and forwards Ali Musse and Malcolm Shaw.
The development contracts for goalkeeper Neven Fewster, midfielders Josh Belbin and James McGlinchey and the CPL-U SPORTS contract for Niko Myroniuk expired following the end of the 2024 league season. Cavalry has retained Myroniuk’s U SPORTS rights for the 2025 season.
Cavalry and forward William Akio have mutually parted ways following the end of the season. The club thanks him for his contributions and wishes him the best for the future.
Contracts for defenders Tom Field and Daan Klomp will expire on Dec. 31, 2024, as will the loan for midfielder Jay Herdman from Vancouver Whitecaps FC.
Cavalry FC Head Video Analyst, Daniel Hutchings has also departed the club and joins English League One side Peterborough United. The club thanks him for his hard work since joining in 2022 and wishes him the best for the future.
