He had a pretty bad groin injury. I can't help but think it's a chronic thing now, and when your number one tool is your skating/speed, that's probably a killer.

I think he was always a bit over-rated, based on his 30 goal season which is a huge outlier. He's only hit 20 one other time (although he likely would have another time if not for injuries), and even in that season, he didn't even hit .5 ppg (barely). He had a good partial segment in LA, but again, injuries.
Except for that one season, he has under 200 points in just over 400 games. Pretty good for a 4th rounder, but he's not a top-6 guy.

Yeah, Athanasiou has (or maybe had) the physical attributes that scouts drool over, being 6’2”, and one of the fastest players in the league. He’s had to work hard to bring his defensive game up to par, but I don’t see a player who gets too involved physically, and he’s always been wildly inconsistent. He can play C or wing though, and perhaps kill penalties?
