Flames Retire Johnny Gaudreau's #13

To me this has to happen this season.

Opening night, Dec. 3 vs Columbus, doesn't matter.

I want Gaudreau and 13 in the rafters before the end of the season.

Dec. 3 vs Columbus sounds fitting to me.

Devastating news.

The only thing to do is this.

Make it so.

I really hope they do. I can't imagine any other player wearing no 13 going forward. He was already almost a shoe in for a Forever a Flame IMO. Just take the extra step to honor Johnny.

Yeah, and do it when the timing is right and Johnny's Family is here.

If they do not do it this year I think it would be neat to have it raised for game 1 in Scotia Place but with that said Johnny made a name for himself in the Saddledome so being the last number raised in that barn would be special.

It really doesn't make any sense not retiring it. Nobody's ever gonna want to touch that number on the Flames again now. There was already debates on if #13 should be retired before his death anyways

I think we can trust that the Flames will honor him in the right way, at the right time, and in a manner that the family also is comfortable with and want to be a part of. Let's not over-react if its not on the timeline fans want. It's not about us.

Yeah this is an emotional day for fans. The complete opposite of the day he left. I have to imagine that come October the family will still be grieving pretty hard. They should do a tribute for sure, but you have to give the Gaudreau family all the time they need before you even start to put something like this together, and it could be years.

Couldn't agree more; the number isn't issued anymore and we give this some time to settle and the family decides when they feel ready to do it.

This won't happen until the family is ready. This is about the Gaudreau family. I hope the fans are patient and understanding.

We all know that nobody will wear #13. The team will likely honor Gaudreau before the home opener.

Absolutely true and well said.

But I think that the Gaudreaus know what their son and husband meant to us and will allow the club to retire his # so that the everyday fan has something to cling to and help heal.

I’m hoping nobody ever has #13 again. As for ceremony I would like the flames to wait a couple of years. His son is 1 and his daughter aren’t much older. The son will never remember Johnny. Think it would nice if they did the Vermonter when they are a bit older so they can see and maybe understand what Johnny meant to Calgary.

agreed. I think however they honor him, it would be important for his family to be involved. I don't think doing something without their blessing or thoughts is prudent.

The flames have proven that they are capable of handling these sorts of things with the right timing, class, and amount. (albeit, this is way worse than anything they've done)

I don’t think the sentiment is that the ceremony MUST happen this year, but that people want to know nobody will ever wear that number, and people want any way for this city and organization to make sure respects of the highest order are paid.

If the jersey is effectively retired today, even if the ceremony is years away, that’s enough.

I want a statue. Yes, retire the number. But I'm going to keep pushing the statue until it happens. He, Iggy, and MacInnis are the three players with the biggest franchise impacts ever.

I agree with the sentiment that any official ceremony is a few years away. Allow plenty of time to pass for the family to feel comfortable, and his kids to understand. That puts the timetable closer to when the new building opens.
