The best possible scenario for the Flames in 2024-25
1. Calgary bottoms out in at least the bottom 3 of the standings to get at chance of drafting HAGENS (projected 1st overall) or Michael Misa (considered top 5 in upcoming draft)
2. With New Jersey’s 1st round pick 2025, hopefully Markstrom is so inconsistent that New Jersey will also fall into the early half the draft.
3. We might lose our Florida 1st round pick to Montreal (because of the Sean Monahan trade), but hopefully Florida finishes high enough in the standings to make it only a late 1st round pick given to Montreal.
4. Trading out our pending UFAs at the deadline for plenty of picks and prospects (here’s my Pickpedia team for the 2024-25 trade deadline: https://puckgm.puckpedia.com/rosters/12014 )
5. An audition at the end of the season for future Flames: Parekh, Honzek, maybe Gridin, Morin and Poirier (if there are lots of injuries to the team)
Comment below your hopeful scenarios for the Flames in 2024-25.

Florida’s pick has to transfer otherwise it will be a total waste of a bad year.

Best case scenario is we win the cup, but realistically that's unlikely. Worst case would be trying to pursue the cup too soon and be middling, giving up the 11th pick next year.
Soooo my thoughts on best case and pie in the sky over the next coming year or two:
1. Bottom out, win lottery, pick 1st overall in 2025. But lose games 2-1, 3-2 with Wolf showing he can be an NHL goalie while Huberdeau goes back to PPG.
2. Florida goes on another run, Montreal gets their 30-32nd pick.
3. Ras is traded at the deadline for another 2025 1st ++
4. Mantha goes PPG, traded at the deadline for 2026 1st ++
5. Trade various pick assets, gain another top 10 pick in 2025
6. NJ picks 10th, slides their pick to 2026 unprotected
7. Both NJ and VGK continue to regress, 2 chances at lottery for McKenna in 2026 (pick 1st and 2nd )
8. We sneak into the playoffs and win the cup 2025-2026 but still have 2 top 10 picks ala above
9. EDM misses playoffs upcoming year, 9th by a point. Draisatl walks. They miss next year as well, by 1 point. McDavid leaves following year.
10. With McKenna from 2026 and everything else in last few years, we start the next dynasty with cups in 3 of the following 4 seasons (lose on in the finals just to be reaslitic you know)
Edit: Obviously over the top in wishful thinking but I do think points 1-6, maybe 7 could potentially happen, while E=NG always

Wolf proves to be lights out and we still finish with a lottery winning 1st overall draft pick.

I don't have confidence that NJ would be bad for 2 more years. So if they somehow stumble this year, I think the best case is 11th overall and keep the 2025 pick.

The results are in the player's hands now, and I'll be cheering for Ws as always. What matters is that the organizational direction isn't shaken off course, which I don't believe would happen.
This team goes on a 2015 style run sometimes. It would be fun, but my expectation would be to still trade off a round of vets and make the GD picks.

Can't the Flames just trade for FLA's 25' 1st if the conditions aren't met?
I would offer FLA their 26' 1st + COL/CGY's 2nd in 25' for their 25' 1st in the unlikely scenario that FLA misses the playoffs. Why would FLA refuse that?
Losing an extra 2nd would be much better than losing what's likely to be a top 5 pick IMO.

Yeah, there's a chance that they miss the playoffs, simply because the east is so deep this year. But there is virtually no chance they finish bottom 10.
And IMO, that would probably be a bad thing anyway, because then there is a very strong chance that they are much improved for 2026. IMO, the best scenario (as unlikely as it is) is that they just miss the playoffs, and we get a 12th-16th pick. That would be fantastic and unexpected.

I don't think that would matter to MTL though, would it? I would think we would still be on the hook for the pick that is stipulated by the conditions (unless MTL were willing to accept the changes - and why would they?)

I still don't fully understand the conditions of the FLA/MTL 1st rounder.

No one does.
Just assume the Panthers' will make the playoffs and the Flames' pick will be top-10, and it will be nice and simple with Florida's pick going to Montreal.

If Florida makes the playoffs there is no uncertainty. Montreal either gets their pick or the Flames if it isn't a bottom ten pick. If they miss then there is a little confusion if the pick is top ten protected or just lottery protected.
