The uhhh "Core 4" probably aren't gonna like this too much. But I think it's a good hire.

Zero surprise.

Likely longer in the making, as that's how Treliving works (Peters was unofficially hired long before the end of the GG season, Feb or March likely) as outside of Keefe winning the Cup, he was done...but as soon as Berube turned down interviews, you knew he was in line for this.

My guess is McLellan now goes to Seattle.

Nylander as compensation sounds fair.

I think it's a good hire for them from the perspective of the "young" guys not getting a free lunch to run the team anymore. The young guys, specifically Marner, has been too fragile and couldn't be told anything without pouting. Berube may not be Babcock, but he'll push them hard. About time someone who's fair but hard is brought in.

I think this is a bad hire for the Leafs. I don't see this working out at all which is a good thing. I think you are going to see a lot of butting heads between players and coach and guys offensive totals go down. The Leafs didn't have a coaching problem, they have a roster problem.

The Leafs are Oilers East in a tougher division. They'll make the playoffs each year, but they're not going to get past Florida or Boston with their current roster. A significant upgrade in net will help, but it wasn't goaltending that cost them the first round loss to Boston.

I think Tre is misreading the situation in TO, he seems to think the answer is just more toughness, the real problem is their cap structure and lack of depth resulting from it and lack of a stud #1D

Good hire for the Leafs, I like it. Berube is what the current group needs right now. Gallant and McLellan were also interviewed and I think I would have gone with either Berube or Gallant.

Treliving seems to like plugs to fill his toughness needs. The problems are pretty simple to identify but hard to address with the cap situation. His biggest is that Matthews and Marner will not get dirty goals or fight tooth and nail in the slot. Tavares can at times get dirty because he is strong but it’s not his bread and butter. Nylander is small in stature but will do what it takes. But three guys just stick to their regular season game and are paid a killing and refuse to adjust. On defence sure they can use a younger #1 to bump Reilly to #2. As well as some depth guys. Good luck finding a #1 without questions. Woll has the ability to be a star but is injury prone. Likely to stick with him I’m guessing. Anyway, Treliving has to hit a home run on the Marner deal. Or it comes to next year when Tavares is off the books to fill a high priced slot. Tre has his hands tied because everyone knows what he has to do. Someone has to do him a favour on the GM side while also getting one or both of Marner and/or Tavares to waive. To me instead of getting a legit power forward scorer he’ll deal one of them for a decent scorer plus another Reeves.

Or someone will convince Tre that Berube is the big change they need, run it back again with the core 4, and try again next year.
