Air Canada ceasing certain routes from YYC
https://calgary.ctvnews.ca/air-canad...gary-1.6541160
Seize the airlines.
Quote:
Air Canada will be ceasing a number of flights from Calgary International Airport beginning this winter, the airline announced Wednesday.
Starting at the end of October, non-stop service to Ottawa, Halifax, Los Angeles, Honolulu, Cancun and Frankfurt will cease.
"We apologize for the impact on customers on affected routes, who will be offered alternate travel options, including re-routing over other airports, or a full refund," the Montreal-based carrier said in a statement.
"No layoffs are expected as a result of these changes."
The airline says it's all part of its plan to "improve the overall stability of the carrier."
It also said that an industry-wide shortage of pilots has resulted in "resource pressures" for Air Canada.

The international/us pier was already severely underutilized, inb4 they just rebrand the whole expansion for domestic flight

Air Canada and WestJet are cutting up the country like the mafia in godfather 2. I have no bottom for my disdain for these legalized criminal syndicates shaking down our country for an essential service

Air Canada continuing to remove their Western Canada presence. Give all your love now to WestJet and perhaps Flair if you're feeling adventurous.

I am surprised Frankfurt is on the list. It's the main hub for most people travelling to Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. I would think it would be a pretty utilized route in Calgary.
The airline industry is a mess right now. Everyone that I know who has had to fly lately has been screwed over. My sister flew from Toronto to Vancouver this summer and had their flight cancelled just hours before take off and it took almost a day for the airline to get them on another plane (Air Canada). Then they had to stop over in Edmonton for 6 hours. Apparently there was no pilot available... but why sell tickets for a flight that doesn't even have a pilot assigned to it? And surely they knew this well ahead of time.
My brother-in-law just flew to Ottawa from Vancouver (West Jet), and the same thing happened. The flight was cancelled a couple of hours before it was supposed to depart, and then they had to catch a route that took them to Victoria, then Edmonton, then Ottawa. Again, a pilot issue. This time the pilot was delayed on his own flight and couldn't make it to Vancouver in time. That also seems odd to me.

I'm all for a high speed rail alternative. Or do you just want people to not travel at all?

Problem with that is Flair is absolute garbage and Westjet is heading that way due to being owned by Onex Corp.

Travel is fine but we need to be using less carbon-intensive methods. I'd love to have high speed rail. France is taxing air travel to pay for it. Of course their country is much smaller but I think we could make local travel work.

For the first one, tickets get sold months in advance.
It's possible the pilot who should have been flying was sick and they couldn't find a replacement on short notice.
For the second one, Pilots are only allowed to fly a certain number of hours. If they get delayed and it's been too long since they started they can't fly again, even if they haven't been flying the whole time.
It sucks, but it's not like these are examples of gross incompetence. The industry is tight right now, like most others, and unforeseen things can happen that throw a wrench in things. It's probably happening more than usual lately, but it's not like airlines are sitting there going "Oh crap, we forgot we need a pilot to fly this plane".

We had an international flight postponed 24 hours in Toronto. It was a pain in the ass but AC compensated us appropriately. We missed a day in Iceland which sucked.

I had a pretty good experience on Flair from ylw to yeg (eww I know). The flight was $120 return, just glad the plane showed up.

for the extreme vast majority of people, flying is not in any way an essential service.
people should just not travel as much as they do. It should be expensive and time consuming.

Surprised to see the Frankfurt one cancelled as well. All the AC people I have talked to over the years have said this route is always busy and profitable.
