Surprised it wasn't Tkachuk. Kind of missing an opportunity I think.
Makar should have been 23. But instead they went with whatever that hell that was.

I hope the actual cover is Makar driving a boat in flip flops. Let’s really get it as far away from hockey as possible.

Hmm, first I'm hearing of this curse
Last few years until I got bored of looking it up
23: Zegras: Career year
22: Mathews: Career year
21: Ovechkin: Missed half the season with injury
20: Mathews again: Career year (at that point)
19: Subban: The start of his slowdown, only 31 points
18: David O'Connor: 108 points

I'm just sick of Matthews and McDavid, so Calgary boy Makar is a welcome choice.

The first five such players – John Vanbiesbrouck (NHL ’97), Peter Forsberg (NHL ’98), Eric Lindros (NHL ’99), Chris Pronger (NHL 2000) and Owen Nolan (NHL ’01) – all played on teams eliminated in the first round of the playoffs in their respective cover seasons. Since then, another seven cover boys have been bounced in the first round, while 10 more were on teams that didn’t make the post-season at all.

But the Madden curse was more "legit" in that the cover athletes suffered injuries did they not?

The NHL Curse has been more broad. Dany Heatly killed a guy. Patrick Kane punched a cabby and then the next time he got it, was accused of rape. Markus Naslund got cheap shotted and was never the same after.

Well, as others said, more broad in that many just fell off or had other things happen. But to your point: Lindros, Pronger, Nolan had career ending or limiting injuries. Not right away of course.

The Phaneuf thing was a stinger. I remember he was supposedly such a show in for the 2010 Olympics that he was on their commercials (and that was part of him being on the 09 cover).

Even as a fun, goofy topic the discussion of "curses" is cringeworthy.
