Interesting article in USA Today's business section examining the economics of Alberta's oil sands deposits for export to America.

A few weeks ago Dick Chenney was up in Fort McMurray surveying the area. Supposedly, from their observations, Saudi Arabia may not be as rich oilwise as was orginally thought hence the interest here now.

So if John Kerry is in on this too, is he more a Benito Mussolini or a Franciso Franco?

Just want to keep all my hegemonistic dictators straight.

Any serious effort to ease America's addiction to Middle East oil starts near this Alberta boomtown cut out of Canada's great boreal forest.

I love how they use the word "ease" and "addiction" here. How about tackling his issue more from the consumption side than the supply side? When your #1 selling vehicles are V8 powered and carrying 1 person, perhaps that's your problem. No I'm not a greenie or anything, just practical.....

Kind of like curing a crack addict with more crack.....

I'm just guessing but I think if Dick Cheney were in Fort McMurray a few weeks ago someone probably would have noticed.

Secondly, he flies around in a big ole blue and white plane which is pretty conspicuous.

Third, he probably hires people for that kind of reconnaissance.

Fourth, when does the bombing start?

There's really nothing new here. Folks in the oilpatch know all about the oil sands in northern Alberta. Canada is already the single-largest exporter of crude oil to the United States (yes more than the Saudis). The US gets more crude from the mid-east, but not from one single country.

Higher oil prices have always made the oil sands more attractive and lucrative. It's the reason why Alberta experienced it's booming economy back in the 70's and early 80's when crude prices were high.

I was just gonna say that.

If I ever hear:
"We have proof that Canada is harbouring Terrorists, and is producing weapons of mass destruction"

Or

"Paul Martin is a tyrant who is a danger to the entire world"

I'm moving to Japan.

If they compensate us well and do it in an environmentally friendly way, let them take what they want, but looking at the history of such things, it seems there is the possibility that we'll be left cleaning up again.
