Flames, Canucks, and Oilers are believed to be frontrunners for Zach Hyman
https://www.thestar.com/sports/leafs...olling-in.html
Quote:
At least three NHL teams have made solid offers for Zach Hyman’s services since the Maple Leafs granted the pending unrestricted free agent the right to talk with other teams, the Star has learned.
The Calgary Flames, Vancouver Canucks and Edmonton Oilers are believed to be the frontrunners in the Hyman sweepstakes with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Florida Panthers, Boston Bruins and Detroit Red Wings also making inquiries with Hyman’s agent, Todd Reynolds.
|
Quote:
It’s believed Hyman is looking for about $5 million a year, over eight years, to remain in Toronto. But now his camp is getting offers “north” of there, according to a source who was granted anonymity in order to speak freely about the situation.

Please be 4-D chess driving up the cost for Vancouver and Edmonton. This feels like the next David Clarkson contract.

Nothing wrong with adding the player but you just know the cost will be way more than it would be worth in the end.

Trading assets plus a 5m+ contract for Hyman will be a big mistake.
A 4th for his rights with a ~4m contract is about as high as I would go. We do however desperately need a top 6 RW with jam, and there doesn't look to be many other options available.

Who said anything about trading assets? Teams are talking with Hyman about signing him as a UFA. Since he already has permission to take offers from everybody in the league, there is no exclusive negotiation period and nothing to be gained by trading for his rights.

North of $5M? With term? Hell no...
Is it because we're not seeing what is happening to these contracts near the tail end? Guys are getting bought out left, right and centre.

Imagine having a pipeline of young players in a development system that could supplement the pro roster for years and years, has anyone told management about these far fetched new age ideas?

Dreger was talking about teams trading for his rights so they can sign him for 8 years.

Dom Luszcyszyn from the Athletic actually has Hyman has the 4th best UFA available after Hamilton, Landeskog, and Ovechkin. Ahead of guys such as Hall, Grubauer, Krejci, and Danault.
I won't pretend to know what all of the analytics he's looking at mean, but in summary he says that Hyman has borderline top line play driving ability, an awesome forecheck, and decent puck skills in zone and transition. He's confident that Hyman will be very valuable for at least 4 more seasons given his ability to do the dirty work in a top 6 role and bury his chances at 5 on 5.
