I mean I guess John Davidson has shown it can work (well not the Cup part)... at least Mcguire has a ring as an Assistant Coach (I'm sure the game hasn't changed much in the past thirty years, right?).

“The Calgary Flames hire Eric Francis as president of hockey operations.”

That would be the only way we beat the Sens this year.

I always think of this old article from his coaching tenure back in the 90s. Of course people change over the years, but McGuire's a strange one:
https://www.courant.com/news/connect...429-story.html

Maybe he'll be suited decently well for a player development role, but I can't imagine this working out. He's a pretty knowledgeable hockey person, but at the same time he's also weirdo Pierre McGuire. Didn't the Coyotes interview him for GM at one point fairly recently too?

I know it's been a long time and it's possible the man has changed, but I can't help remembering this: https://www.courant.com/news/connect...429-story.html

McGuire has interviewed for a few GM positions over the last decade.

Timing is interesting with the NBC-NHL deal coming to an end, and possibly him not being able to find another broadcasting gig with ESPN or TNT.

Player development has also evolved into the position where if a team wants to give a job to an alumni with little front office experience, they give them a player development job.

So who's Ottawa trading to Buffalo for Tokarski?

He has coaching experience and has scouted so it's not the first time he's worked with an organization. I never did understand why he was getting GM interviews given how long he was out of the NHL and a general lack of experience in management but I guess we will see if this is a token position or not. Being Ottawa and all would anyone be surprised if he one day becomes GM?

He must’ve really kissed Melnyk’s butt each time he was in town. While I don’t think he’s a bad guy, he’s awfully annoying to listen to. What that means for the longevity of his career there, I’d venture to guess it’ll be under three years. He’s probably the happiest guy on the planet right now.

Meh. No different than the flames hiring conroy or Vancouver the Sedins. I would also go as far as saying he probably knows a bit more on what goes on,on that side of things , compared to the players I just mentioned when they first started out.

Funny... Somehow I read it as "The Pens", and thought: "Why would Burke do this?"... Ah, the Sens! Ok, gotcha!

Knowing how Melnyk runs things, it's more likely because McGuire agreed to work for minimum wage.

Wonder what he did to suck up to the owners there. The guy is one of the biggest snakes in hockey

Have no idea how he will fare in his new role, but I’m happy for him.

I went to the Winter Classic in Washington back in 2015 and bumped into him the day before the game. He was super friendly and genuinely enthusiastic to talk hockey with a random a fan. Really nice guy.

I remember him mentioning he wanted to see an outdoor game in Saskatchewan and low and behold the Flames ended up playing in that game.

Wish him all the best!

I could see him being hired for something media related or possibly in the scouting department...but what does he know about player development?

In fact, if you think about it, Eugene Melnyk and Pierre Dorion are always saying really dumb #### in the media, so you'd actually think they could use someone with decades of broadcasting experience in a media relations role.
