Default New Poll: Should/Will the Flames Keep Treliving

The last question is confusing as people are answering it differently - and it isn't clear if it is a predictive question v. a question of what they should do. So starting a new poll/thread to clarify.

Perfect poll options.

I think they should, and I think they will keep him.

I totally understand people that think they shouldn't though. He's made a lot of mistakes, missed some big opportunities, and the team has been treading water for 3 seasons now.

I am on the move on from him.

Seems like a nice guy, but dude is 100% clueless on how to hire a proper HC.

I would like to see this poll run again after he ignores the top coaches out there and either removes Interim from Ward, or hires some other random no-success, no-name coach ala Gulutzan & Peters.

I'm torn on this one. I'm as big a BT fan you'll find. But at some point....

I chose option 1. I'd be cool with them replacing him with a guy who has a proven track record. But I also think he'll get a mulligan due to the covid interruption and with how he handled the Peters' dilemma (quick and efficiently).

If BT hires a proven coach like Laviolette or Boudreau I'll quickly be back on board with keeping him. But I could also see that not happening and my patience has worn thin when it comes to his head coach hirings.

I think he gets one last chance to fix this team. I wouldn’t be shocked or overly angry if it happens.

It feels like Sutter after 2010 where if the team gets off to a poor start he is fired in season and we see Conroy get his shot.

I don't have any strong feelings either way, whether they should relieve him, but I don't think they will.

I'm with Burke...stop blaming coaches and Management. There are FAR worse GMs around the league than Treliving. He keeps his cards close to his vest, he will protect his players and remembers more than anyone that they are people first players second and he has done more good work than bad.

He will make some changes but just like Hamilton/Ferland for Hannafin/Lindholm no one here or anywhere I read and not one arm chair GM saw it coming. I never once heard anyone anywhere posting "we got get this guy Lindholm" prior to that trade.

I have a hard time picking out individual moves and constructing a narrative. Good GMs have lots of bad moves, and I've criticized a lot of trades that have come up roses. The important thing is the overall trend.

I think it's really important to remember what he inherited. When he was hired, we already had Gaudreau, Monahan, Backlund, Giordano, and Brodie. A big part of the core was already in place. And in my opinion, he's consistently improved the supporting cast behind them, and the roster has consistently gotten better during his tenure.

If Tkachuk and Lindhom are your 3rd and 4th best forwards, that's depth you can win with. The problem is when the top two guys are MIA and they have to be #1 and #2. If Lucic-Bennett-Dube grind down the opposition and then your stars can hop over the boards for an o-zone shift and capitalize, that's excellent value from your 3rd line. But if they're the only line that's going, you're in tough.

Similar story for D: our bottom 2 D pairs have gone from absolute tire fires when he took over to a legitimate strength. Valimaki-Andersson a year ago is incredible for a third pairing, and we had 3+ NHL calibre D eating popcorn in the bubble. But when you can't rely on Giordano to be that elite #1, it puts a lot more pressure on guys like Hanifin or Andersson. Where previously it would be a strength that they can win the secondary matchup, when your top pair gets dummied all of a sudden that's not enough.

So I think it's really unfortunate the way things shook out. The core of Gaudreau-Monahan-Giordano doesn't seem to be good enough to be a contender. But they're too good to bottom out and pick #1, Jonas Hiller notwithstanding. And I don't think obvious tanking moves like trading all of your goalies would go down well. But I really think if they were the type of stars that can win in the playoffs, we'd be singing his praises for what a deep, talented team he built behind them.

Not sure on BT. On the one hand, he's made some decent trades and done really well with the draft, and has been a wizard with contract re-signings. On the other hand his free agent signings, constant goalie issue, head coach carousel (although this last one might be a result of ownership restricting options via pay) have really negatively impacted the team.

He's done okay, not great, not terrible, just meh. He's been somewhat unlucky with the rebuild in that Bennett hasn't panned out as predicted and the team being better than expected in 2014-15 resulting in no high pick that year. Had Bennett panned out and the Flames drafted another highly skilled player in 2015, things could have look vastly different.

I think if retooling, you probably keep BT. If the plan is to rebuild, probably want someone new.
