Flames Day 5 Phase 3 camp. Backlund returns to practice

Looks like same groupings

Pat Steinberg @Fan960Steinberg
#Flames training camp day five is underway. Mikael Backlund is back on the ice after missing yesterday’s practice.

Pat Steinberg @Fan960Steinberg
Derek Ryan absent from the main group for a fourth straight day. He did skate briefly yesterday in between groups.

Regulars still in separate groups. We’re expecting that circumstance to change soon, maybe as early as this weekend. #Flames

Honestly don't know what this Flames team is.

I don't think they are the team that won the west in the regular season 17 months ago, but I also think they're better than the middling results we saw this year before the break.

They could face plant. They could go on rip. I honestly have no clue.

But they need Backlund and Ryan to to the latter. Great to see him back. Lots of time to get Ryan back too.

Great to hear that Backlund is back. Hopefully Ryan and Dube returns soon as well.

Ryan made a public appearance yesterday, so not sick in quarantine
I'd guess he shows in the 2nd group, unless he's injured

Man what a nightmare pairing for announcers Valimaki-Macky would be.

I can rationalize the bogus vague injury reports as protecting the player from focused physical attacks when they return but why can we not have better info on how they are handling COVID?

It appears there are rules that have impacted the Flames groups. Why are these secret?

Are the Flames/NHL prepared to change the rules (like CDC , WHO, Canadian public health experts) ?

Otherwise it would be pretty simple to say that Gaudreau was in contact with someone who tested positive and has 3 negative tests and needs 4 negative tests over 4 days or whatever the rules state?

This secrecy makes the whole process bush league and suspect.

Simple statement of which players are missing practice with non-COVID issues should be mandatory.

Without actually looking at our preseason/early season stats, in my head it feels like we always start slow and look pretty meh. It makes me think we're going to get rolled.

I have a good feeling about Dube, I think the break might have done him some good. He could come out of the gates explosive

I think the return to play rules expressly forbid teams from revealing covid diagnoses.

As I understand it, this is also the reason Edmonton is a hub and not Vancouver because the BC government wanted the NHL to be forthcoming with covid cases

Exactly how I feel about them.

I am hoping that, since everyone seems to be down on this group, that they will rise up and go on a bit of a run.

But this little play-in is so random - who will get off to a good start? Which goalies will get hot? And in a 3 out of 5, one or two bounces are enough to sway the series. A goal vs a goalpost, and you are either moving on or in the lottery.

SO much for the NHL being a good corporate citizen.

The NHL is doing a very structured case study on COVID and establish what hopefully best practices on how the manage covid spread and is keeping this information top secret.

Already the unlimited mandatory testing of a large sample without symptoms has shown that the covid infection rate is far higher than what any public heath agency has published

The last report I could find was that as of July 13 46 positive tests on 600 players An infection rate of 7.6 %

The 315,775 positive tests in Florida's 21,480,000 people come to 1.47% infection rate.

Well if the Flames have taught me anything, go into the playoffs with low expectations as a fan.

There are zero expectations.

None of these guys are up to speed and in game shape, on any team.

Pro athletes are about routine, and this whole situation, at least in the first few weeks at least, nothing is routine, or has been in routine in their lives, since early March.

Therefore, for some, they will excel, others will be shells of what they were given all this time off, rest, rust, stress, pandemic issues and lack of routine. Toss in that all those individual issues have to somehow mesh with the other 20+ players on the roster to get a cohesive team.

Throw out the entire season up to this point for individuals and the team. The winners of the series will be the team that makes the least mistakes, and just hope the Flames can manage to be better the the Jets and other teams in managing all the distractions and lack of routine. A best of 5 series doesn’t leave much time to get your feet under you in doing all that, either.

I wonder if Dreger will pick some random skater in the smaller group and speculate on fitness as well.

People need to relax. Your a fan. Not management. It’s not really anybodies business why they’re doing it. All the mindless fretting and speculation which borderline on conspiracy theories is pretty pathetic if you ask me.

They’re separating the camps for now. We know they’re not going to tell us why. Just relax.

Eric Francis up next on 960. This ought to be something on the heels of Treliving's statement.
