Agent denies Datsyuk 'holed up at monastery with Russian priest
Meanwhile in Russia. Keeping it as a rumor as Russian reports are notoriously unreliable.
https://www.rt.com/sport/492126-nhl-...-rebel-priest/
Quote:
Former NHL star Pavel Datsyuk is reportedly among those holed up at a Russian monastery where a priest has seized control and guarded the area with Cossacks after being told to stop services due to his Covid-19 conspiracy beliefs.
Former Detroit Red Wings star Datsyuk, 41, is said to be at Ekaterinburg’s Central Urals Monastery, where according to local media Shiigumen (father superior) Sergius has taken over after ousting the abbess of the convent.
The power grab comes after Sergius was reportedly banned from conducting religious duties because of his claims that the Covid-19 outbreak was a “pseudo-pandemic” and that it was being used as an excuse to microchip the public.
The priest is also said to have complained that the closure of churches in Russia during the coronavirus crisis was done under pressure from “the atheistic authorities.”
On taking control, Sergius reportedly refused entry to local religious leaders while journalists in the area have claimed the site is being guarded by Cossacks loyal to the priest.
In an even more bizarre twist, reports now state that former Red Wings center Datsyuk – who currently plays for hometown club Avtomobilist Ekaterinburg in the KHL – is at the facility supporting the rebel leader.
Sergius is reportedly the hockey star's personal confessor.
"Father Sergius has been my spiritual father for more than 10 years. [He] has a burning, loving heart, he sees me through and through," Datsyuk has said of the priest, Russian media reported.

I guess I find it surprising, but not shocking.
Do they just sit around all day worshipping God?

I would guess "yes, and no."
If this is a sequestered religious community something like the Branch Davidians, then "yes," insofar as their view of "worship" is all-encompassing. That is, in accordance with most Christian monastic theology, all aspects of life consist of worship, and thus, everything must be done to the glory of God. But then also "no," that does not mean 24-hour-a-day prayer and praise vigils inside of a sanctuary. For members of these sorts of religious communities their fulfillment off God's will is incorporated in their life together, as a group. They form as extended families that work, eat, pray, play and live together—set apart from the rest of the world.
... But that's just me guessing.

"Father Superior Sergius" is a bit on the nose as far as villain names go, don't you think?

Father Superior Sergius has a mountain Monastery Fortress guarded by armed Cossacks.
Either the producers of the new James Bond movie are kicking themselves for not thinking of it first or its the plot of John Wick 4.

And he is an ex-police officer who served 13 years is prison for murder.
He isn't the leader of a cult per se, but hardcore Orthodox Christians act like a cult.
The Russian government has been pushing the church to take confessions through the phone and internet, and some apparently believe that the government is eavesdropping on that information. In Russia, it probably could be true.
Apparently this priest is well known if Russia having been the confessor for high ranking political figures in the past, so maybe he has reasons to mistrust the government.

Datsyuk has always been a weird cat.
His views on homosexuality and unyielding support of Putin are extremely disturbing and caused me to reexamine my thoughts of his legacy. He's not an individual who is deserving of praise in any form IMO.

Another poster-child for a fantastic screening process.

Putin did a lot for Russian hockey. There's nothing wrong with hockey players supporting him. Odds are whoever will come to power after Putin, he wouldn't care about hockey as much.
I never followed Datsyuk much, nor do I care about lgbt, but the only comment I could find, is that when asked about his opinion on promoting lgbt values - rather than being homosexual per se, Datsyuk somewhat dodged the topic by saying something along the lines that he is of eastern Christian faith ans that is all he will say on the matter.

"Superior" is not very accurate translation. The original Russian word means something like "he who is living and acting the way Jesus told us all to live and act". It is sort of a "rank" for a monk.

From what I could gather, it is more or less a regular church, not branch davidians style cult. However, the chief of a church has been becoming more and more crazy.
