Default Re-visiting Game 7 of the 2004 Finals (Gelinas, Conroy & Sarich)

For the first time, Martin Gelinas, Craig Conroy and Cory Sarich sit down to watch Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals:

https://calgarysun.com/sports/hockey...nley-cup-dream

Quote:
Gelinas, who is into his eighth season as an assistant coach with the Calgary Flames, had finished a practice with the team at WinSport.

Conroy, assistant general manager with the Flames, had recently returned from a scouting assignment in Europe.

To provide a balanced perspective, Cory Sarich — a member of the enemy (and victorious) Tampa Bay Lightning then and, eventually, a rearguard for the Flames — also sat down after his crack-of-dawn appearance co-hosting the morning show on Sportsnet 960 The Fan.

All three had never watched this game. Not even Sarich who now calls Calgary home.

Until a quiet winter afternoon, that is, more than 15 years later…
It’s a lengthy article, but if you can stomach it, there are some interesting insights from the players who lived it. There’s also a 7:30 video that Kristen Anderson put together in addition to the article.

Flames should have had a power play in game 6 ot when a trip setup the game winning goal.

Still remember that stuff so clearly.

One of the best moments of my life, that spring run. I feel old when I think it was so long ago.

Think how old I feel being a teenager watching the Flames win the cup in 89 lol

Can’t bring myself to read about it.

But from my recollection it was a painful game to watch with the Flames not doing much (although not nearly as bad as the game 7 against the Ducks in ‘06).

Conroy’s slapshot goal from the point to make it 2-1 in the third was a great effort and breathed life into the Flames.

From there it was an exciting finish including Leopold getting robbed by Khabibulin, who of course was trash the rest of his career.

Game 6. Saturday night. Saddledome. C of Red. Oh how sweet that would have been.

The Leopold missed chance in Game 7 still haunts me.

They should have gotten Rhett in on this too.

Man, game 6 was so goddamn heartbreaking. If the Flames were gonna win it, it was going to be that game. They played their hearts out. (It was in!)

By game 7, you could tell they just didn't have anything left in the tank.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he said no. Even at the time he was never about celebrating until they had something to celebrate. I bet he has no interest in reliving that game.

Yep, and best part is, Flames get a PENALTY in Game 7 for the EXACT SAME PLAY (leg whip trip) which TB scores on.

That non-call on the trip in Game 6 still pisses me off to this day. Every single time I think about it (which thankfully isn't very often anymore).

The loss in game 6 sits squarely on the guy sitting in section 211 row 16. We sat directly behind him for the entire playoff run.

He had a German army helmet with Darryl’s Army painted on. Red, yellow and black camo painted face. When the Flames scored, we all had our ritual high fives, hugs etc.

So at the end of game 4 he says.. it’s been fun, but I can’t make game 6. It’s his sister’s wedding. I remember telling him “You can’t miss this.. go to her next wedding!” He didn’t show and the rest is history.

Feels like a CBC Canadian Heritage Moment if you ask me.

Sorry but me and my friends were part of the voodoo too.

When watching game 6 as teenagers, between each period we had pizza and played street hockey. Between 1st and 2nd OT we ran out of pizza and lost the ball for hockey so we had chips and played football. We didn’t even all make it inside to see them lose it happened so fast.

Feels like just yesterday I was 21 years old, and we would walk up and down the red mile; stopping in pubs up and down 39th.

That was never going to get called in 2004 in double overtime of the SCF.

Just the way it was back then.

I am old enough to remember 89 , but for me that run was the best
We had all of Canada with us.The emotion from series to series , hell from period to period was amazing.
The non call it OT game 6 still gets my blood pressure rising. what a run though good memories till the way it ended
