New thread, based on the frustration many people feel in finding new music in the enormous multi-verse of new music.
Based on music you already like, the helpful members of the Calgarypuck community will suggest similar artists and albums you may enjoy. You may not enjoy every recommendation, but if we can be turned on to even a couple of new favorites, then mission accomplished!
Corsi listed the following albums as personal faves . . . some really good records on this list. I want to start with his choice of Alvvays, one of my favorite bands (Canadian too):
Quote:
Here are some artists and albums I enjoy.
Sufjan Stevens (Illinois was the best album of the previous decade; Carrie & Lowell was inconsistent)
Father John Misty (I Love you Honeybear)
Lykke Li (I Never Learn)
Arcade Fire (The Suburbs yes, but Reflektor no)
The XX - XX
Sharon Van Etten (Tramp; Are We There was ok)
The Shins (Wincing the Night Away)
Feist (Metals)
Bright Eyes (I'm Wide Awake It's Morning)
Alvvays (Antisocialites)
Here are a few selections that I see as connected to Alvvays – bands with some serious "girl power", who fill their music with great pop hooks (like Molly Rankin):
Jenny Lewis – On The Line (2019) The Voyager (2014)
The Beths – Future Me Hates Me (2018)
Vivian Girls - Memory (2019)
Sacred Paws – Run Around The Sun (2019)
Julia Jacklin – Crushing (2019)
Courtney Barnett – Tell Me How You Really Feel (2018), Sometimes I Sit And Think, And Sometimes I Just Sit (2015)
Ex Hex – It’s Real (2019), Rips (2015)
Bat Fangs – S/T (2018)
Sheer Mag – A Distant Call (2019)
Juliana Hatfield – Weird (2019)
Walrus – Cool To Who (2019)
New Pornographers – In The Morse Code Of Brake Lights (2019)
Best Coast – Fade Away (2013)
Next time I will try to find connections to the amazing Sufjan Stevens - Illinois.

Lots of great bands listed that really influenced my current playlists. It got me thinking about how my tastes have changed over the years and how I got there.
Some bands that really started influencing me 15-20 years ago as I discovered there was so much more than what was on the radio:
The White Stripes, The Black Keys, The Avett Brothers, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Arctic Monkeys, Modest Mouse, The Shins, Dropkick Murphys, Flogging Molly.
All those got me to listening to:
Deer Tick, Shovels and Rope, Lumineers, Shakey Graves, Alabama Shakes, The Cave Singers, First Aid Kit, Heartless Bastards, Mother Mother, The Tallest Man on Earth.
And my current go to bands:
Lost Dog Street Band, The Sam Chase, Caamp, Amigo the Devil, Ghost of Paul Revere, Lake Street Drive, Tejon Street Corner Thieves, The Dead South.

i've been enjoying some synth and electronic elements in some popular songs. it's still really important to me to hear real instruments in the mix, i would welcome any recommendations based on a couple examples of things i find great below.
This is an excellent thread idea. I'll definitely check out some of the bands above and check in for more. I definitely already had Jenny Lewis in the playlist (and have since Rilo Kiley actually).

I love Stars (Canadian Indie band). I feel Canadian indie bands tend have less pretense and more rock vibe than American indie (but could be totally off base as I struggle to find good American Indie in such a big sea of artists).
But if anyone knows bands like Stars, that'd be awesome.

A few of these have been mentioned already, but I'll list them anyway: Rilo Kiley, The XX, The Shins, TV on the Radio. A couple less popular that I like: Bhi Bhiman, The Cave Singers, Deer Tick, Two Gallants, Reuben and the Dark.
Hopefully there is something in there that is new to you and you like.
Sufjan Stevens (Illinois was the best album of the previous decade)
I have been busy with the holidays and return to work - here are my thoughts on connections to Sufjan . . .
He is such a unique artist, it is hard to identify direct connections. Among the genres he is often included in, I think Americana, Indie Folk, Baroque Pop and Chamber Pop are the most helpful. Also, he is kind of an "old soul" and some of my recommendations will be older material:
The Kinks - Something Else By The Kinks (1967), Face To Face (1966)
Paul Simon - The Rhythm Of The Saints (1990), Graceland (1986)
Los Lobos - Kiko (1992)
R.E.M. - Automatic For The People (1992)
The High Llamas - Gideon Gaye (1994)
Tindersticks - Tindersticks II (1995)
Lambchop - How I Quit Smoking (1996)
XTC - Apple Venus Volume 1 (1999)
Badly Drawn Boy - The Hour Of Bewilderbeast (2000)
Low - Things We Lost In The Fire (2001)
Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (2001)
Belle And Sebastian - The Life Pursuit (2006), Dear Catastrophe Waitress (2003)
Decemberists - Picaresque (2005)
My Morning Jacket - Z (2005)
The Hidden Cameras - Awoo (2006)
The Polyphonic Spree - The Fragile Army (2007)
Fleet Foxes - S/T (2008)
2019:
Angel Olsen - All Mirrors
Morrissey - California Sun
National - I Am Easy To Find
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Ghosteen
Rheostatics - Here Come The Wolves
Tindersticks - No Treasure But Hope
Vampire Weekend - Father Of The Bride
