It's a good time to be an Avs fan. One of the hottest teams in the league about to start the first round fo the playoffs, with the highest percentage chance to get 1st overall in the upcoming draft. That's unreal.

Oilers already planning the parade:
https://edmontonsun.com/sports/hocke...-lottery-again
Can you imagine the furor?
Can you comprehend the fury?
Can you picture the expressions on the faces of the other out-of-the-playoffs general managers if NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daley held up a gold card like the one he held up four years ago when the Oilers won the right to pick first overall for the fourth time during the Decade of Darkness?
Ah, but if the Oilers win it he will, at least for a few seconds, be able to feel like the greatest Gretzky in Oilers history.

Sabres going in to the top two would be fantastic of course, both Hughes and Kakko look like can't miss players.
Will be pissed if Detroit wins -- the spot Buffalo would've been in if they didn't decide to suddenly show up for the last game of the season.

So if the Habs, Panthers and Flyers win, that pushes Edmonton to 10th overall right?

Hoping for:
Buffalo - Just to see Dahlin, Eichel and Hughes.
Devils - Just an irrelevant club right now and with Hall likely leaving in the near future, sure why not?
Detroit - Give the once storied franchise a break because they need it.
Hoping against:
Oilers - Obviously
Colorado - Don't need a decent team to get better
Vancouver - Duh
Montreal

Can't wait to see all the GMs sitting there with their good luck charms.
Tallon will bring a rabbits foot. Botterill will bring a clover. Dorion will sacrifice a goat.

If the Oilers win I look forward to Hughes being all like "Ya, my brother told me college was the best time of his life, I feel obligated to give myself that very rare and fleeting experience, k thx bye"

The fact that they are sitting by rubbing their greasy palms together in anticipation pretty much showcases why the NHL draft system is still a sham. The annual NHL charity drive -- keep giving the same old drunk homeless guy his handouts and he never gets anywhere with it.
System needs a complete overhaul, I don't know how that isn't totally apparent to everyone involved in the game.
I realize that not every team in the lottery is the Oilers but I still think its a joke that failure is rewarded to this degree. I think all teams should have a chance at first overall too. Why punish success?

the standard for greatness in Edmonton is to win something were you have no impact on the outcome.

Because the draft does what it's supposed to do - funnel elite talent to the worst teams so those teams can become better in the future. Along with the salary cap, it's the primary mechanism to enforce parity in the league. And the league sees parity as in its collective financial interest.
Burke was actually complaining the other day that the system is unfair because a team that just failed to make the playoffs, like Arizona, might win. He thinks they should go back to a model where only the five worst teams are eligible for the lottery (but he also says if a team picks #1 OA it shouldn't be eligible to win the lottery again for three years).

The entitlement is strong.
Never feel sorry for Oilers' fans. I hope they finish 31st every season, and soon 32nd.

To your first paragraph, it doesn't really do that. The Flyers jumped something like 10 spots (to Burke's point). They weren't rewarded.
It would be nice if they could come up with a system something along the lines of taking the last 10 games of the season for the bottom 5 clubs and rewarding them first overall by means of best winning percentage. Win your way to the top pick versus tanking. Some of those games could still have meaning before being officially eliminated whilst others would otherwise be meaningless games 'once' eliminated. Either way it gives bottom teams something to play for and a purpose to play hard to the end of the season. Fans of those teams would also have much more reason to tune in and cheer a victory versus the alternative.
Im sure the above is not a perfect plan and has many holes to it, but I'm just spitballing an idea/concept is all.

Someone behind Edmonton in the East would be nice. Philly, Florida, Montreal.
