Default The Jaromir Jagr Effect: How a legend fueled the Flames

Hi all,

I don't think I saw this posted anywhere but I found a great piece on the effect that Jagr had on the Flames and on some of their players and organizational decisions. It point's to players such as Johnny, Bennett and Janko specifically.

On a related note, Jagr has officially restarted his professional season with his hometown club in the Czech Republic. He took over a year off after he was cut from Calgary and than was injured fairly quickly by a stupid goon.

https://thehockeywriters.com/jaromir...algary-flames/

I always argued that having a player of Jagr's status, a player who has played through so many different version's of the game that now his style is back in style. His knowledge, his offensive vision, his history and mindset of playing with players like Gretzky, Lemieux, Messier, Francis and more. The players mentioned above are the leading offensive producers the game has and probably will ever again in a lot of ways.

The caliber of knowledge and cache that Jagr brought to the Flames organization will play dividends for a long time, I only wish that the Flames had handled it a bit better in terms of making sure he didn't rush himself into action at the start, kept him away from Glen Gully bag skating the guy, reached out to him a little sooner so he could have trained to his liking and been ready for the season and really watched him so we could get the max benefit of him in the line up.

I still don't understand why we cut him, we could have shut him down for a few weeks, gotten him healthy and kept him around as long as possible. The season was over and everybody knew it and they were paying him the $1 million salary regardless so perhaps he could have helped out more and maybe seen some game action. Tough to see a legend go away like that.

Either way, sorry about the long post but it's a good piece!

He’s playing again?

Bring him in for Neal!

He said in the Czech media about a week ago that he was not going to be playing anymore as a 46 year old.

Troll job....he had a birthday since and played last night as a 47 year old on a line with Plekanic. One year and one day after getting gooned in one of his first games after leaving the Flames.

My biggest disappointment of 17-18 wasn't the powerplay or Gulutzan's incompetence or Brodie's slump or the goaltending.

It was how good Versteeg - Bennett - Jagr looked as a line for about three games before never being a line again. They were so promising.

Jagr didn’t light it up, and was clearly fighting a nagging injury, but was on the ice for something like 15 GF and 7 GA.

It stunk that he didn’t get in to game shape and rhythm before getting hurt.

He definitely didn’t hurt the team on the whole, just couldn’t get healthy.

The Flames need to bring him back to Calgary as a guest for a playoff game this spring. Would blow the roof off the Dome.

Exactly he wasn't in NHL shape from day 1 but still managed to have a positive effect off ice on the young team.
If Jagr could have stayed healthy he would have boosted secondary points, it was worth the gamble.

If Treliving had signed him in the summer, Jagr would have been the player we hoped to get. It was clear he still had the strength and know how, but the one thing you couldn't ask a 46 year old to do was not have a training camp.

I could have told you that July Spencer Foo was not going to be better than 46 year old Jaromir Jagr, and I'm not even paid to know that.

I was at the Flames season ticket holder meeting when they announced that Spencer Foo had signed with Calgary earlier that day. Ken King was gushing and raving about this kid as if he a top free agent on a super low AAV. I was wondering why they were SOOOOOOO excited for what in essence was a low risk/low return college free agent.

Than Ken King made all the jokes about how an Edmonton based player had selected Calgary and than it made more sense!

Bring him back a few days before the first playoff game to loosen the boys up

Personally I think Tkachuk gained the most from Jagr's time here.

The way he protects the puck with his ass is Jagr'esk. Also his work around the boards on the cycle. Tkachuk isn't the best skater and he learned a lot about cycling and puck protection from Jagr.

I think Jagr's contract termination was mutual.

Jagr's is #2 all time in NHL scoring. I don't think he was content to have good Corsi on the 4th line, while being in and out of the lineup due to injury.

Gulutzan helping bringing in Jagr due to their previous relationship was maybe the best thing he ever did for the flames. Wish 68 got more games and time here

I would love to see Jagr brought in, in a player development role, as maybe an avenue leading into coaching. I believe he would be one of the very few, former superstars, that would be awesome at it.

I still can't believe we had Jaromir Jagr as Calgary Flame.

Yeah, I was SO excited it was crazy. It really is too bad that it didn't work out better, even for just one season. Was still fun though.

I'd love to see how he would have fared on this iteration of the Flames.
