Friedman's 31 - June 25. Dougie's role. Rieder UFA. Flames interested in Zucker?
Flames related:
Quote:
2. I really don’t like taking shots at players who get traded. You’re gone, move on, let’s go. Dougie Hamilton was hit with personal criticism when dealt from Boston to Calgary, and now while en route to Carolina. Hamilton politely declined a request to address all this, not wanting to toss more gasoline on the fire.
The move out of Massachusetts definitely was a personality clash, with differing opinions on who was right and who was wrong. After making a few calls, this is not about who’s attending team slumber parties. This is about role. Hamilton did not formally request a trade, but there is confirmation there were discussions about his spot in the lineup. There was agreement a move would be better for both sides.
The Flames wanted to re-unite TJ Brodie and Mark Giordano, which will happen. They felt Travis Hamonic would benefit from playing with a steadier partner, as opposed to Brodie, more of a jazz-musician freelancer. That would take Hamilton off the top pair, which didn’t thrill him. He also didn’t start last season on the top power play, eventually replacing Brodie midway through. That was another bone of contention. This was necessary for both player and team. Hamilton will benefit from Carolina: he hears everything. Less noise there.
Noah Hanifin and Elias Lindholm were unhappy, too. Their contract talks were difficult, with Lindholm’s last conversation ending in a blowup the day before he was traded. A lot of players eager to prove something.
|
Quote:
3. Last summer, when Calgary traded for Hamonic, the Flames fought hard to keep Adam Fox from the Islanders. Before Round 1 on Friday, Flames GM Brad Treliving made his final pitch to Fox’s advisor, Matt Keator. Treliving wasn’t going to risk losing him for nothing.
|
Rumblings at the deadline Flames had interest:
Quote:
8. Sounds like Los Angeles will not qualify Tobias Rieder. Acquired from Arizona just before the deadline, he will be a free agent.
|
Quote:
16. There was Western Canadian interest in Jason Zucker. I asked if that meant Calgary, Edmonton and/or Vancouver, and was told, “Yes.” God only knows if that referred to one, two, or all three of them
|
LOL
Quote:
22. A team thinking of trading for Mike Hoffman tracked down one of his fiancee’s college roommates to find out as much as they could.
|
Lots of draft day rumors, rumblings, and behind the scenes.

Flames should most certainly sign Tobias Rieder. Man, if there's a more perfect fit for Backlund and Frolik, I can't imagine one. He's a perfect bottom-six player.

Dougie was smart enough to know the PP lineup with Brodie was awful and that was a reason to ship him out?

Yeah, I like this idea. Plus it is likely to piss off Oilers fans

Taking a while to get to 5000

Who was it on this site (Bingo was it you?) that said they always thought of Zucker as a guy that would wind up in Calgary? Might be right!

Not a great year but only a season removed from back-to-back '15-20-35' seasons. Only 25. Somewhat surprised that they would be willing to lose him over nothing instead of qualifying him at 2.45M. Maybe just didn't want to deal with a headache in getting him signed given his last contract negotiations.

I REALLY want Rieder... I think he would be the perfect player on this team. Huge fan of his for a few years now.
Gaudreau-Monahan-???
Tkachuk-Jankowski-Lindholm
Rieder-Backlund-Frolik
Lazar-Shore-Foo
Hathaway
Trade Brouwer and Mangiapane to a team for a 7th round Pick
Bennett for Simmonds? (wishful thinking)

Hamilton continues to come off as entitled and "me first". Some of it seemingly warranted (playing on the pp) and some of it not (not wanting to play on second pairing, wanting his bro on the team). I could a lot of players saying "this is a me first guy, not a team first guy."
Also the guy was talented, but I continue to believe Gio carried the pairing below the hash marks. Hamilton will put up points in Carolina, but his plus/minus will suffer if he doesn't gell on the first pairing.
At the end of the day the trade improves the stability of the top-4 mainly by improving the second pairing.

I’m not getting the Rieder love in. Another 3rd line RW? Is he an upgrade over Frolik? Can’t create a logjam without upgrading the position.
This one stuck out for me. Yes, we have rittich and gillies but neither inspired much confidence. Helps us recoup a pick or add another prospect.
The $79.5 million cap will make it tough for Winnipeg to keep Paul Stastny. The key might be offering some kind of draft pick/asset for another team to take Steve Mason. He has one more year at $4.1 million. If they can clear that, we’re in business.

How does Dougie come across as a "me first" guy here?
Gio-Hamilton was the best pair in the league last year. That pair helps the team win.
The Flames PP was putrid last season, partly because of strategy, but also because of player usage. Why Dougie wasn't on PP1 is absolutely mind-boggling.
So call it selfish if you want, but Dougie in both these roles helped the team win.

Given the season zucker just had, his acquisition cost will be high.

More in the sense that gio-hamilton was the best pairing, but gio-brodie, hamilton-hamonic might have been a stronger top-4. But if Hamilton was saying "no I need to be on the top pairing or I'm going to be very angry" it really is a "me first attitude."

Rieder plays all three forward positions and shoots left.
Rieder - Backlund - Frolik would be such a killer line. That's a shutdown line that can actually score.

Rieder would be a good depth player. Not the solution to our top 6 obviously, but he would be a welcome addition for sure.
Zucker is a fine player too and if Tkachuk sticks on the RW, Zucker would make a good replacement as a 2nd line LW.
I would rather see us get a natural top 6 RW, but in lieu of that, with some shifting around, Zucker could work.

Rieder, Zucker and Frk would all be good additions. I'd prefer adding such a complementary player to throwing 5y/30m contracts at 30-somethings.

Except Brodie's PP finished top 10 in the league whereas Dougie's PP was still one of the worst after he was moved to the top PP. That's the common misconception here. The success was short lived and was still a bottom 5 PP with or without Dougie.
The real problem was when we lost Versteeg, the math does not lie. Anyone who does the research will see it

So the Flames considered Hamilton a steadier partner for Hamonic. Kind of goes against a lot of the bad takes here that Dougie wasn’t solid defensively and that Gio was carrying him.

Simmonds is a disaster in the making. I'd caution you to go look at his stats, the trends, his age, and what his next contract is going to look like.
I want no part of Simmonds at this stage.
I'd love Zucker, and I imagine that means we'd have to take on Ennis to get the job done (rumoured).
This Week:
To MIN: Michael Frolik, Michael Stone, Andrew Mangiapane
To CGY: Jason Zucker (RFA), Tyler Ennis
(well, that's clearly not enough for Zucker...)
So perhaps:
To MIN: Michael Frolik, 2019 1st round pick
To CGY: Jason Zucker (RFA), Tyler Ennis
To OTT: Michael Stone
To CGY: 2019 4th round pick, 2020 4th round pick
July 1st:
Sign Derek Ryan (3 years, 2.5M)
Sign Luke Schenn (1 year, 1.75M) - or some other defensive depth add who is a 6/7 d-man.
Roster is "set" by July 2nd:
Gaudreau - Monahan - Tkachuk
Bennett - Lindholm - Zucker
Ennis - Backlund - Ryan
Shore - Jankowski - Lazar
Brouwer
Giordano - Brodie
Hanifin - Hamonic
Kulak - Andersson
Schenn
