Hockey Canada Olympic roster announcement. 10 AM MT
Hockey Canada is announcing their olympic roster today.
Will be covered by TSN and Sportsnet live.
Dreger reported yesterday that no CHL players are expected to be on the Canadian team, even though David Branch said last week that the CHL would allow their players to come to the Olympics.
Dreger also reported that Cale Makar politely declined a spot on the team offered by Hockey Canada.

Can someone make a logical statement as to why a guy like Makar would decline a spot? Why wouldn’t you want to represent your country? He literally just did two weeks ago.

Maybe it's a generational thing and it doesnt have the cache anymore, but I don't understand how anyone, especially a 19 year old, can decline an invite to the frickin' Olympics.

Just speculation, but Makar just did miss a month of university because of the World Juniors. He perhaps did not want to miss more or could not get permission to miss more.

I was thinking the same thing, he already represented his country and missed a ton of school as well as likely some games.
Missing another huge chunk of time? Yeah, it probably came down to 'bad idea/inability to get permission.'

He also just spent the world juniors as the #7 and PP specialist, without much of a role. I am sure he wouldn't be much more than that on this team, so that probably played into it.

I'm looking forward to this, I cant wait to see what this team is going to look like.
With NHL participation you could choose this team with a Yahtzee cup or just draw names out of a hat, I think this is going to be interesting.
What would you do if you saw Theo Fleury's name on the team-sheet? Hes been playing beer-league...maybe Robyn Regehr?

Then you're not much of a hockey fan. Are they the biggest names from the best league? No. But these will all be players that passed through the NHL or had name recognition at one point. I suspect you'll be surprised how many you recognize.
