Default The team needs a shakeup. what to do?

It's clear unless the stars and moon align this team just can't play with any consistency or for the most part, fire in their belly's. I'm starting to question Giordano as captain when I see Gaudreau get slashed 10 times a game and nobody touches the other teams star.

My take, if Giordano could land a top line sniper I do that trade.

What would you do with this frustration?

- Minor trade,
- Major trade
- No trade
- Fire the coach

A shake-up at this point probably does more damage than good.
If you trade Gio, have you considered what the D looks like? Basically only two top 4 dmen, including one (Brodie) who hasn't played like one this season at all.

Yeah there is not enough depth either at the NHL level or in the organization to really believe we can trade our way out of this. We really need to develop a couple of key pieces.

Gio has been brutal this year. With his contract, what makes you think any team would want him, let alone over pay for him with their top line player?

Once again this team making the playoffs and raising fan expectations has lead to hysteria regarding the state of the team and the rebuild. The needs are still pretty much the same: top line winger, top 4 defenceman, starting goaltender.

Any trades or moves have to be made with trying to address those positions. Other than that let it play out with a coach who is trying to teach a system that's more than just stretch passes and no possession.

what to do? Be patient. 5 key players are 23 and under. Three more are 26, 27 and 28

No knee jerk reactions. Just start to move out UFA's that won't be back, and stick to the plan

Very tough to make big trades in season in Bettman's new cap era NHL. Only thing I could see happening is a vet getting punted to the AHL to send the rest a message and not let them get complacent. Even that, they seem reluctant to do. Chiasson has been terrible all season and he's still not only here but in a top 9 forward role.

I don't think Chiasson has been terrible at all.
He is mis-cast but has delivered for his contract and the type of player he is.
Not sure why he is such a focal point.
Teams win and lose with their best players, so in terms of who should be held accountable it is plainly obvious
- Johnny
- Monny
- Brodie
- Gio
- Goaltending (both of late, Elliott for the entire season)
- Bennett

There's your group right there that hasn't done the job.

So let them sink or swim together. Put the five of them out there as a unit.

Patience is key. I don't think you move any young players right now but if there's some solid offers for Gio I think you have to look at it but a defenseman needs to come back the other way.

I'm not happy with recent results, but overall we are right about where I expected us to be: battling for a wild card spot.

Trade off two vets (Ferland/Bouma/Brouwer/Wideman are candidates, haven't brought a lot to the team for a good amount of time now). Bring up Rasmus Andersson (was +18, by far tops on the Heat last I checked) and Jankowski and start breeding them in sheltered roles at the NHL level. At least for a 10-20 game stint. Give them a taste.

This rebuild needs to take a step and it's about time someone from within the system starts filling those 5-6 D positions, growing pains be damned.

yeah he's been so brutal, 22 points, +7, 52% xGF% at 5v5 all while being the defensive half of his pairing. trade the bum.

maaaaybe his leadership isn't there, but fixing that would just mean giving the C to Backlund or Tkachuk instead, not trading him for another scorer who'll get murdered by this ineffective system

The Flames are on the verge of being contenders but a few things have held them back this season.

- Gaudreau missed camp and then got hurt
- Gaudreau has to deal with the pressure of a new contract
- Gaudreau is being dragged down by Chaisson
- Gaudreau is being slashed too much
- Monahan got hurt and then missed camp
- Monahan has to deal with the pressure of a new contract
- Elliot had a baby
- Brodie has a fiance with MS
- Brodie is playing on the wrong side
- Brodie is being dragged down by Wideman
- Wideman
- the team can't get a fair shake from the refs because of Wideman
- the team had to learn a new system
- the team only plays well rested opponents, unlike the Oilers who only play tired teams

And the nice thing is, as long as they keep sucking we can keep coming up with excuses.

Either that or just accept that they aren't good enough and aren't getting better.

The Flames look to be just a couple of years away from contending. (Just like they were two years ago.)

^ i think you forgot that Hamilton had to adjust to his 3rd system in 3 years. I have heard each of the other ones several times.

The best players need to be held accountable. So let's hold them accountable.

Then what?

The last thing the flames need is a shake up.

They need a steady hand to see this season through without franchise altering decisions.

This isn't a playoff team, stay the course, continue with the process, move assets for a good return at the deadline, continue team building.

Firing the coach right now would be idiotic, this team was going nowhere that mattered at the start of the season no matter who was at the helm.

It would be rash to just up and trade any of the core players considering how well the team has played for the majority of the season. However, I find it really hard watching the same defensive mistakes from Wideman and Jokipakka. Constant mistakes, constant turnovers and constant coverage issues cost this team on a regular basis. The Flames need an upgrade on these guys quick.

The Oilers have improved their defence by leaps and bounds because they've rid themselves of poor performers and now have a correctly slotted defence core. As a result, now their forwards have easier breakouts and more time in the offensive zone. The Flames really need a similar transformation because the same constant mistake are killing the team.

Brodie and Hamilton have had challenges defensively too, but at least their offensive game has helped the team this season unlike Wideman and Jokipakka who aren't good enough anywhere on the ice. At this point, I'd be ok with Engelland replacing Wideman on the top 4 and playing Kulak with Wideman on the bottom pair. Jokipakka is not an NHL caliber defenseman to me. His hockey IQ is non-existant.
