Default Brazil's Chapecoense soccer team on plane that has crashed in Colombia

News just breaking. Possible there are no survivors

Link

Quote:
Authorities are responding to an emergency after a plane with 72 people on board crashed on its way to Medellin international airport in Colombia.

The airport said on its Twitter account that the aircraft had departed from Bolivia.

Local media reported that the charter aircraft was carrying members of the football team Chapecoense from Brazil, which is scheduled to play Copa Sudamerica finals against Atletico Nacional on Wednesday in Medellin.

Medellin’s Mayor Federico Gutierrez said that it is possible there are survivors.

“It’s a tragedy of huge proportions,” Gutierrez told Blu Radio on his way to the site in a mountainous area outside the city where the chartered aircraft is believed to have crashed shortly before midnight local time.

I'm not familiar with Brazilian soccer teams... what level of soccer is this?

Hopefully there are survivors.

Me either. I just assumed (probably my bad for assuming) they must be a somewhat high level team for it to be breaking news here. Global led with it. I hope there are survivors as well.

Six people have reportedly survived, including player Alan Ruschel, who is in hospital. Several sports journalists are also believed to be onboard.

"Aviation authorities earlier said there were at least six survivors. However Colombian police later reported 76 had died and five survived."

It's being reported 3 players(2 goalkeepers,1 defender), a flight attendant and a journalist survived.

Apparently the goalkeeper has passed away, only five survivors at this point.

The team was headed to the finals of a continental tournament for club teams. As it sounds like they were on a bit of a Cinderella story-like run, the supporters of other Brazilian clubs were getting behind them because they weren't traditional rivals.

It's been pretty sad reading all the stories about the team today. About to play the biggest match in club history, and then this. Just devastating.

They were playing in the Europa League equivalent. First time qualifying for a tournament outside of Brazil and was travelling to the final!

Atletico National of Colombia (the team Chapecoense was travelling to) have suggested the trophy be given to Chapecoense.

Reminds me sadly of the 1972 Andes flight disaster:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1972_A...light_disaster

Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 was a chartered flight carrying 45 people, including a rugby union team, their friends, family and associates, that crashed in the Andes on 13 October 1972, in an incident known as the Andes flight disaster and, in the Hispanic world and South America, as the Miracle of the Andes (El Milagro de los Andes). More than a quarter of the passengers died in the crash and several others quickly succumbed to cold and injury. Of the 27 who were alive a few days after the accident, another eight were killed by an avalanche that swept over their shelter in the wreckage. The last 16 survivors were rescued on 23 December 1972, more than two months after the crash.

those pictures make it look like the plane really slammed into the ground - although there does not seem to have been an explosion or fire.

would lack of fire/explosion possibly suggest the plane ran out of fuel?

Classy move by the Colombian club to do that. Such a horrible disaster today, may they rest in peace.

That is a tasty story.

Condolences to the families of this Brazilian team.

In the midst of terrible tragedies small glimmers of compassion like this need to be recognized to serve as an example to all. Tragedies will continue to happen, the most important part of them is emerging from the other side remaining human. That way we can dignify the struggle of mankind by living on as others dear have passed.

I'd like to see the engraving read something like:

ATLETICO NATIONAL COLOMBIA
presents this Trophy in memorium of the tragic loss of
CHAPECOENSE BRASIL
as they travelled to compete for it as sportsmen.

Presented to: (Survivors)
For
(list of victims)

This picture really highlights the tragedy. Teammates who did not make the trip to Medellin sitting in their locker room stalls this morning.

Different circumstances and continent here, but, an entire team perished in this incident.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_L...l_air_disaster

"The Lokomotiv Yaroslavl air disaster occurred at 16:05 Moscow Time on Wednesday, 7 September 2011, when Yak-Service Flight 9633, a Yak-Service Yakovlev Yak-42, carrying the players and coaching staff of the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl professional ice hockey team, crashed near the Russian city of Yaroslavl. The aircraft ran off the runway before lifting off, struck a tower mast, caught fire and crashed 2 km (1.2 mi) from Tunoshna Airport on the Volga River bank. Of the 45 on board, 43 died at the crash site. One of the two rescued from the wreck, Alexander Galimov, died five days later in hospital. Only the avionics flight engineer, Alexander Sizov, survived."
