I don't expect anyone to be able to know this.
Bear with me on this one, folks.
I'm 40 years old. I've been a Flames fan for as long as I can remember. But for whatever reason, two highlights always stick in my memory, no matter what shenanigans the Flames are up to. At this point, I've been remembering these two highlights for so long, I almost think I've made them up.
As a kid, I used to watch sports highlights on 2&7 and I'm pretty sure this is where both were from.
I distinctly remember Zarley Zalapski scoring a hat trick as a Flame, and on the highlights, the sports host saying "Zalapski with the salapski" for the hat trick!
The other, was a Joel Otto goal, where he came down on the right wing and deked through a defender at full speed, then breaking in on goal and scoring a gorgeous deke. The host described it as Otto looking like a young Jean Beliveau.
Does anyone else remember these calls or am I insane? And even better... can anyone find video evidence? You'll be my hero, if so.
Totally obscure, I know. I have no idea why these two calls always stuck with me. But I think of them often.

Definitely could have been. Or Grant Pollack. Or Maybe it was Perry Solchowski and Darren Dutchysen (spelling). No idea.

Sounds like Mike Toth. He had a fondness for creative wordplay. He always referred to Jeff Shantz as the "Duke of Duchess." (He stole that from me, BTW).

Yeah it totally sounds like Mike Toth. Maybe Sports at 11?
Googling "Zarley Zalapski hat trick" gets this exact thread as result #2.

A Zarley Zalapski hat trick? Did that actually ever happen?
For some reason I remember Glen Featherstone's only goal as a Flame. I believe it was an empty netter shot from the Flames end.

The Joel Otto one is in the memory banks but don't remember the Zarley one. The sports at 11 guys were must TV for me. Loved it. As for video that might be a tall order.

I'm def wrong, probably because I'm way younger than most of you, but it sounds like something Don Taylor would say.

If he did score a hat trick my guess is it would have been the 95-96 season when he scored 12 goals. The other 4 years he played he only scored 2, 3 and 4 goals in one season.

Can of worms....opened...
I cannot verify (nor am I googling the stats) the Zalapski hat trick, but I do recall the Zalapski Slapski comment...
The 11 and 11:30 Sports shows were funny and edgy in that era. An honourable mention is deserved for Dutchy and Slokowski abusing Brian Hall at every opportunity on the Edmonton version ( I believe called Sports Night).

While Ed had his catch phrases, he wasn't really one for the silly plays on player names. That was more Toth's thing.

That whole "Sports at 11" gang were pretty colourful. You came for the sports and stayed for the comedy.
Ed had is colourful wrestling phrases.
GRANT POLLOCK was the obligatory straight man with that crew, but is a pretty funny man in person.

I expected the question to be "is your cat doing singing?". I'm still not entirely sure to this day.

Ron Manz would play that role pretty well too. Often was made the butt of some jokes and would take it all and do his part.

Don't forget Ron Manz. He was super, duper straight. To the point where he had almost zero personality.
He would probably be their version of Boring Sean Monahan.

Joe "I score when I like " Nieuwendyk was another. Couldve been Toth or Lownsborough.
Mark Hebscher with the original "live" Headline Sports (now Snet 360) was also good. Van Earl Wright when Cnn did sports.
Now they all do it in so far as trying to entertainers first.
