Can you get on a Calgary Transit bus w/o paying fare?
Hello,
A girl of a friend of mine was at the South Health Campus, and has ID but left her purse at her home. She also has no money. She needs to go to Whitehorn. I looked up the schedules and the BRT #302 goes to the downtown, and stops by the LRT. I told her if she could get there I could drive her to Whitehorn.
Now I know for a fact that in Winnipeg, if you have no fare, and it is late at night (especially if you are female), you can ride for free, and the driver will just telll you to pay the next time you use the Transit system. I believe it is a law in the City of Winnipeg. I was wondering if it is the same in Calgary?
Any help from transit riders, Transit Drivers, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

I feel like it depends on the driver you get. My dad drove for Calgary Transit for 15 years and for stories like that he'd let her on no problem. But some drivers are real pricks.

She was a welder but lost her job to a drinking problem. That is coincidentally what she is at the Health center for. I don't know her very well at all, but my guess is she may not have the funds as I also heard she is getting evicted from her apartment she shares with another female roommate.

Are you able to pick her up and drive her home? It's getting pretty late.

The only way I'll pick her up is to drop her off early tomorrow morning at Renfrew Detox. Not sure if you know anyone with drug or alcohol addictions, but enabling someone is the absolute worst thing you can do. If she got so sick (alcohol poisoning), and has a history of alcoholism that she ended up in a Hospital, I'll let her sleep in the waiting room.
My prayers are with her, and that she sobers up enough to realize her predicament; she is hungover, in an area far away from her home, and broke. at times like this, many of us have life reflections on how we ended up in these situations, and have to change our ways. Bailing her out will not do that.
Back to the point of the thread creation, it seems she is refusing to take a bus for the last 90 minutes, and by now I am not sure if the buses even go downtown from the South Health Campus.

Are buses even running right now? My transit app says they are all done for the night around that area.

I'm assuming your getting periodic angry to pleading phone calls, tell her to ask for the hospital social worker, there'll be one around ER, they can arrange what they think fit, takes it off your hands for the night.
Good luck, been there, done that!!
Hospital can probably arrange to admit her to detox tonight, they can here in Vancouver.
