McDonald for sure.
I really don't get the Tuulola hype around here. I realize he had a good rookie camp, but I'm shocked that so many on here seem to have him ahead of McDonald, Pollock, Fox and Dube just because of that one week in early July. Remember when Tim Harrison had a fantastic rookie camp?

Tuulola, rather easily.

Goalies are definitely the position which is hardest to project. Furthermore, they are the least likely to crack a roster based on number of available spots on a team alone. I always hope goalie prospects will become eventual difference makers but that is rarely the case, for this team at least.

I think Mason McDonald has the natural attributes that allow a high ceiling. He might take a while to develop, but I do think he has potential.
Tuulola was a good pick, but I have doubts about the offensive upside.

Draft Status:
McDonald was considered by the organization as the best goalie in his draft class.
Tuulola was, a month ago, a regional pick that the Flames didn't even take ahead of Lindstrom or Fox or Dube or Mitchell Mattsson.
Upside:
McDonald can be a #1 G,
Tuulola can be a second line winger,
Downside:
McDonald is another career AHLer, except unlike Irving has size and superior positioning.
Tuulola is another career AHLer, who doesn't sniff 0.5 PPG in minor pro and never gets a callup.
Current Status:
McDonald is signed to an NHL contract. He was one of the better goalies in his Junior league.
Tuulola is not signed to an NHL contract. He also was not a big producer for his Junior team in Finlandi, at least in his draft year.
Overall: McDonald is a better prospect than Tuulola.

Goalies are just a wild card, simply put. Brent Krahn had all the tools, what happened to him? DiPietro?
Meanwhile, guys like Price, Lundqvist, Kipper, and Holtby all should have been 1st OA in their drafts and they weren't. (Well, Price maybe #2).

Dipietro's career was side-tracked by hip issues.
The reason why there are so many goalie busts is that there are only 60 NHL jobs. But that alone doesn't mean that one should rank a long-shot late round pick like Tuolola over a higher round, higher pedigree prospect like McDonald.
If there hadn't been positive dev camp reviews would we be seeing Tulola even ranked top 20?

Long shot for both these guys to ever make the NHL. Way too early for both these guys.
I picked Tuulola because he hasn't proven what he's capable of yet. He can potentially be a steal. McDonald on the other hand hasn't shown anything to prove he'll ever be an NHL goalie.

McDonald starting to pull away from Tuulola. Interesting for a run-off.

Truthishly, I wouldn't really pick Tuolola at this spot anyway. But against a goalie in a runoff, I pick the skater.
Pollock, Hathaway and a couple other guys are ahead IMO.

At least Tuulola had a positive development camp. There wasn't much positive about McDonald's 15/16 season.

I'm not sold on Tuulola yet, but I honestly think McDonald is already, or will be a bust, so for that reason I pick Tuulola. It'll be good for his development to play in the WHL next year.
I'm actually pretty annoyed that we are picking between these two and not guys like Fox and Dube.

People can vote in these however they want, but making any decision based on a summer dev camp seems strange to me.
So I go back to how highly regarded Tuulola was prior to that camp, and how this very organization placed him on their list, relative to other players, says a lot.

None of the Above. Whichever one of these guys wins is getting rated higher then he ought... I'm gonna pick Tuulola based on his personality and that (unlike McDonald) he's yet to statistically do worse in his draft +2 year then he did his draft year.

So what are we supposed to do with the summer dev camp results?

Nothing.
Enjoy that you got to see some potential future Flames in July and move on. Don't try to read anything into anything.

Whatever you want. But even the organization doesn't view them as a assessment opportunity for the most part. The purpose of the camps are to provide a mid off-season check in, ensure off season plans are being adhered too, give newly drafted guy a taste of the pro experience, build relationships, and in general try to set up guys to have a good camp in the fall.
They are fun opportunities to get a gauge on players, particularly those we don't see - but those observations shouldn't outweigh more tangible data points - such as the fact that this very team picked 6 guys ahead of him in the draft, including 4 that aren't in this run-off.
