Default Calgarypuck Prospect Ranking 2016 - Round 9

It's baaaaaaaaaaaaaack. almost like Shark Week on the Discovery Channel Calgarypuck and the Summer Prospect Ranking has become an institution for rabid Calgary hockey fans.

2013 - Sean Monahan is the top prospect (2013)

2014 - Johnny Gaudreau takes his turn (2014)

2015 - Sam Bennett come on down! (2015)

The last three years have had a prospect named first, and then make an impact right away on the NHL team. Bennett had to have surgery and mop up the OHL first, but all three were big players for the Flames right away.

Will that be the case again this year?

As per usual the vote is up to you. Some see it as most likely to play, some see it as highest ceiling, others see it as a mix of both.

Happy voting!

Round 1 - Tkachuk 83% (http://forum.calgarypuck.com/showthread.php?t=155575 )
Round 2 - Jankowski 42% (http://forum.calgarypuck.com/showthread.php?t=155585)
Round 3 - Gillies 65% (http://forum.calgarypuck.com/showthread.php?t=155591)
Round 4 - Kylington 35% (http://forum.calgarypuck.com/showthread.php?t=155598)
Round 5 - Hickey 38% (http://forum.calgarypuck.com/showthread.php?t=155615)

Round 7 - Shinkaruk 67% (http://forum.calgarypuck.com/showthread.php?t=155648)

The Brock Otten OHL article made me more excited about Mangiapane. I'm switching from Tyler Parsons to Andrew Mangiapane.

50 points as a rookie in the AHL? Yes please.

I'm guessing he'll win this round by a fair margin.

Someone mentioned ledges in prospects and I think Mangiapane is the last of this ledge before there are about a half dozen guys that could have big years and move up a ledge or continue to sputter, or just not overcome whatever they are battling (size, speed, pace of play too fast)

I think it's cool how good our prospect pool looks. Also the fact that we have a bunch of solid prospects to vote on excites me!

Pollack. Terribly underrated player who was a real leader for his team. Given his size and talent he's exactly what the Flames need.

I hope so. Makes that deal a franchise changer, especially if Jokkipakka becomes that 4th dman this year and they manage to avoid losing him in the expansion draft.

He didn't look out of place in the AHL at the end of the season from what I read.

I'm on the Pribyl wagon now. Young RW with decent size, from what I can tell he was second in Czech league scoring. Could be exactly what we need if he can adapt his game to the NHL.

Why?

We put up a poll to break a virtual tie between two players and Mangiapane didn't receive as many votes as the other guy.

And given that he didn't beat Poirier in a wide poll (tied) or in a run off (convincing loss) I'd say he wasn't the 8th. Now you did say why didn't he get 9th, which it looks like he will as we are voting in round 9.

I voted for Kulak, but looks like Mangiapanne takes this round. Mangiapanne was next on my list after Kulak

Went with magpie this rnd but it was close between him and Phillips. I don't think this guy is getting enough respect because of his size, you would think we as a fan base would know better from #13. His skill level is unreal.

The chances of a player Johnny or Phillips' making it are very very slim. It isn't about respect, it is just about the practical odds. Johnny is the rare exceptions.

Fair enough however I still believe the game will continue to evolve to favour skill over size. I have always had a soft spot for small guys too. You are probably right but how awesome would it be to snag another super skilled player in a late rnd again?

I would agree. 4th tier is Poirier and Mangipane with remaining way far behind in voting. It would seem that ledges are marked below someone getting 55% or greater (clear majority) of vote.

Top tier: Tkachuk (A+ prospect)
2nd tier: Jankowski, Gillies (A prospect)
3rd tier: Kylington, Hickey, Andersson, Shinkaruk (A- prospect)
4th tier: Poirier, Mangiapane (B+ prospect)

Looking back at last year it is interesting to see who moved up a tier or two and who went down:

1. Sam Bennett - 96% top tier A+ prospect

2. Emile Poirier - 38% 2nd tier A prospect
3. Jon Gillies - 35%
4. Micheal Ferland - 44%
5. Joni Ortio - 63%

6. Mark Jankowski - 38% Run off 3rd tier A- prospect
7. Brandon Hickey - 57% Run off

8. Markus Granlund - 47% 4th tier B+ prospect
9. Morgan Klimchuk - 55%

10. Oliver Kylington - 43% 5th tier B prospect
11. Tyler Wotherspoon - 39%
12. Mason McDonald - 29%
13. Rasmus Andersson - 54% Run Off
14. Bill Arnold - 46%
15. Kenny Morrison - 56%

16. Ryan Culkin - 32% 6th tier B- prospect
17. Hunter Smith - 42%
18. Kenny Agostino - 32%
19. Brett Kulak 54% Run Off
20. Ruslan Rafikov 43%
21. Andrew Mangiapane 33%
22. Austin Carroll - 32%
23. Garnet Hathaway - 32%
24. Patrick Sieloff - 38%
25. Keegan Kanzig - 51%
26. Adam Ollas Mattson - 29%
27. John Gilmour - 51% Run off winner
28. Pavel Karnaukhov - 49% Run off loser
29. Turner Elson - 73%

30. Bryce Van Brabant - 33% C prospect
31. Tim Harrison - 32%
32. Riley Bruce - 53% Run Off
33. Matt Deblouw - 51%

Taking Pribyl here. I think he has really good upside, and a way higher floor than Mangiapane.

I am thinking a run on defencemen again after Pribyl, and then Mangiapane for me, but seems like Mangiapane will win this.
