Calgarypuck Prospect Ranking 2016 - Round 2
It's baaaaaaaaaaaaaack. almost like Shark Week on the Discovery Channel Calgarypuck and the Summer Prospect Ranking has become an institution for rabid Calgary hockey fans.
2013 - Sean Monahan is the top prospect (2013)
2014 - Johnny Gaudreau takes his turn (2014)
2015 - Sam Bennett come on down! (2015)
The last three years have had a prospect named first, and then make an impact right away on the NHL team. Bennett had to have surgery and mop up the OHL first, but all three were big players for the Flames right away.
Will that be the case again this year?
As per usual the vote is up to you. Some see it as most likely to play, some see it as highest ceiling, others see it as a mix of both.
Happy voting!

Went with Janko this time over Gillies, just because Gillies lost a year of development to injury.

Gillies is #2 on my list. He has all the tools, plus that certain je ne sais quoi

Tough choice but went with Gillies over Janko. Really curious to see them both play full seasons in Stockton this year.

Torn between Gillies and Jankowski, although Hickey and Mangiapane keep coming up in my brain as well.
I went with Gillies because he's still got the pedigree of a stud starting goaltender, and those are hard to come by (as we've seen in recent years). My one hesitation is his hip and seeing how he does in the pros this year after the surgery.

Gillies is going to move up a spot or hold on to last years ranking after missing a full season. Maybe our prospect base isnt as as good as I thought.

Went with Jankowski. Could have easily gone with Gillies, Kylington or Hickey here based on upside. Gillies and Kylington have star potential that the other two don't (IMO) but one is a goalie and the other is really raw. Went with the guy who looks on the cusp but also has very good upside.

That's the thing with this year's top ten: we haven't yet seen much of Gillies, Jankowski, Mangiapane, Andersson, Hickey or Pribyl.
We need more info!

Reminds me of the days when half the Flames had "B" names. I think Backlund, Brodie, Bouma, and Bollig a the only ones left.
I went with Gillies. It's nice having a blue-chip goalie prospect like him. While we aren't completely dependent on him, it would be nice if he continues to develop well.

I went with Gillies ...
wasn't even close in my mind, I see him as that next tier. Not sure who I'll vote for next but it's not a no brainer for Jankowski for me. Kylington could be the guy as well. Hickey is interesting.
I think Anderssen would have been in there too but suddenly he has an issue to over come almost like Mangiapane and size.
Was worried about Gillies and his hip, but when he said he's had the injury for two years and actually adjusted his play to avoid hurting it that changed for me. If the guy can play hurt for 2 years and do what he did, I'm pretty buoyant that he will be strong as hell when he readjusts to having mobility.

Sorry to derail, but Andersson's conditioning is not a concern at all for me. I fully expect he will show up at main camp in shape. And I fully expect that he will learn how to be a pro in Stockton.
And, it's July. And he's 19.
And he will most definitely have received a talking to from BT.
So if it continues, if it pops up again... big trouble. But I suspect he'll get the message.
And assuming he does, he's a very poised and very talented 19 year old.

So Gilles misses an entire year because of injury, and even after that year can only take limited part in the prospects camp, but somehow people are voting to move him up in the rankings?
Goalies already have a huge bust factor even without missing an entire development year, but I guess most people are rating purely on potential and not factoring in the odds of a player making it. Which is fine I guess, but seems strange. I shouldn't be that surprised though, as for some reason the collective CP conscience seems to have a soft spot for goalies. Hope this turns out better than when we ranking Irving as the 2nd best prospect.

agree with all of that ...
but 5 days ago I didn't have even a minor asterisk when it came to projecting the kid, now I do. Fingers crossed!

Think you should give us a little more credit than that.
Jankowski has come on but not everyone is comfortable with that until they see a season of pro hockey.
Poirier and Klimchuk have taken on some water last season, and have fallen off (not writing them off).
Three stud forwards have been graduated over the past three years.
Gillies ... though hurt, did nothing but almost dominate in 7 AHL games before getting hurt.

No asterisk for Gilles missing an entire season with an injury and then only taking limited action at the prospects game? That's a much bigger deal to me than Andersson being called out for conditioning despite dominating in performance.
I'll likely rank others ahead of Andersson as well though, as I too give him an asterisk now, but for me Gilles one is even bigger.

Absolutely. But maybe it's a good thing that this happened now. Maybe he gets the message before it becomes a chronic problem.
What if he had come into camp in ok shape and managed to cruise through it on talent alone? He might have left thinking he's doing enough.
Now he knows that he's not.

Gillies just because if he turns into a franchise goalie, we are going to be contenders for a looooong time. Tons of potential and seems to succeed everywhere.
My picks:
First NHL game: 2017/2018 season
NHL regular: 2018/2019 season
