Default Panarin bonus could mean trouble for Hawks

I see Panarin will collect another $1.75 in bonus money if he finishes Top 10 in scoring. As of this morning he is in the Top 10 but it's tight. Go Panarin! Bring on the cap squeeze for the Hawks yet again.

Good. It would be BS if they have a 24 year old UFA helping them circumvent the cap. They should be forced to make some tough decisions, like trading Andrew Shaw and Scott Darling for a Flames 2nd round pick in 2019

This would be in addition to the $850,000 in bonus money he already has earned. That's a big deal given what little money they have to fill out the roster after paying the top end.

how does this work? Is the bonuses deferred to next season? Or does it come into effect as soon as he reaches his milestone?

Do they sit him? Seems to be in the best interest of the team actually.

I dont think player or PA would stand for that outside of an injury or something. Hopefully it makes Shaw unaffordable.

Is Darlings salary that high to make a difference trading him away? I wouldn't think so. I'd assume Chicago would like to keep a cheap proven backup.

So sorry as juicey as it sounds to have a stunning back up goalie, with inflated stats from a strong team in front of him, I don't want to be the Edmonton Oilers and rely heavily on a backup goalie who hasn't proved enough to start on a team like today's Flames. It's worth the risk but shouldn't be our only and best option.

That would be a good way to piss him off

What a very oilers thing to do. "You've had a great year, we don't want to have to pay you for it"

I'd imagine sitting a player so he can't earn earn bonus is a way to really restrict your ability to sign similar free agents in the future.

Outside of the bonus issue you have to wonder what they do with him a year from now contract wise, especially if he puts up similar numbers. I guess if Bickell comes off the books that free's up cap space.

Would also be an excellent way to piss the union off. If the Bruins Hawks were to sit him against his will, the NHLPA could try arguing it as cap circumvention.

Freudian slip? Watching Boston lose badly?

Yeah. I was reading about Boston's epic fail against Ottawa right before I posted that.

I'm glad Chicago will be forced to make some tough decisions. That means the cap is doing it's job and creating parity
