The first category 5 since Andrew will hit the states sometime today/tommorow and the first song on my itunes was "New Orleans is Sinking" ........i feel like such a bad person at the moment, stupid irony.
In all seriousness, i hope everyone will be ok and that the damage is less then what occured after Andrew. NO would be a bad place to be caught since it's below sea level.

My Mom and Sister are there right this minute and they are trying super hard to get a flight out of there...I can't get a hold of them, so I hope they're okay, but it's crazy. I was actually going to go and meet them, but had too much to do here...

Wow - thats just horrible - I can't imagine going through that. A cat 5 hurricane hitting that city will be just devastating. We can only hope that everyone has the sense to leave and keep the casualties to a minimum.

The stretch from Houston to the Mississippi/Louisiana border has not fared well when hit with large, devastating hurricanes in the past. This one looks like a monster.
LA...I hope your family gets out safe...or at least gets to some place safer.

Anyone remember David Neal telling Rob Kerr the other day that Katrina was just "a punk category one hurricane"? Doesn't so wimpy now.
It's amazing that the entire city of New Orleans is being evacuated. I hope LA Flames Fan's family can get out safely.
Hurricanes are increasing in magnitude and frequency--a byproduct of global warming? According to this, yes.

Thanks DFF....
My sister got a flight out from Baton Rouge, after they took a $200 cab ride from New Orleans, and my mom is still at the airport...She says it's starting to get windy. I figure that's a pretty safe place to be, above sea level anyway, not like New Orleans....
I think they're safe now...

Not a byproduct of global warming. The experts say that the number and intensity of hurricanes go in cycles.
LA Flames Fan, I to hope your family gets out.
My friend lives there, as well as her entire family. She is in LA right for her friends wedding. Last year at this time, I was expecting to be living in New Orleans right now.
But experts predict 40 to 50 thousand deaths. This is crazy. New Orleans is a beautiful city, and I hope that damage is a minimum. But all indications point to the worst natural disaster ever.

Well other experts are saying that it is a byproduct of global warming; see here and here.

Not dialup friendly, but here's a huge graphic explaining alot of the logistics of New Orleans, how the entire city could be under water if it was directly hit by a Cat. 5 hurricane. Fascinating and terrifying all at once.

Huge graphic of Katrina
This thing is massive, and ridiculously powerful. Being the weather geek that I am, I've been glued to the Weather Channel all day.
Sustained max winds of 175mph. Gusts up to 207mph. That's on par with F-3/F-4 tornados. Examples of damage from those kinds of tornados:
The lower the pressure of a hurricane, the more powerful. Andrew had a pressure of 922 mb. Camille was 909 when it made landfall. Currently, Hurricane Katrina has an even lower pressure of 902 mb.
This is one hell of a storm.

There are around 10,000 people in the superdome right now. probably around another 2,000 waiting to get in. Probably could be around 20,000 before the storm hits.

That's great news LFF.
The big question is when something like this happens what do homeless people do? People that can't evacuate the city?

They are all getting rounded up and put in the superdome.
Last I heard, there where 10,000 in the Superdome already, and 2,000 waiting to get in.

Wow... estimated 100,000 people in New Orleans proper with no way of getting out of town...
