Question Lance Bouma: what sort of contract has he earned?

Restricted Free Agent Lance Gordon Bouma is having a phenomenal year.

4th on the team in goals scored with 16.
7th on the team in points with 33.

Safe to say he'll be earning a substantial raise on his $775,000 salary, and the warrior deserves it. He embodies everything that is great about the Calgary Flames this season.

3 questions:

1) Is this guy going to continue to produce like this, or is it a statistical fluke year?

2) What is market value for a goal-scoring top 6 forward who plays flat-out every shift?

3) If you sign him long term and he continues to take as much punishment as he does, how long before his body is too beat-up to play his effective power forward game?

I think he's earned himself 3+ years at $3.5 million. Is that insane money to give a player who only last year was on the bubble and projected to be a 4th line energy guy? He most definitely deserves it, but is it risky for the Flames to be tied into a big contract with a player who has only had one really strong year?

I fricken love Boums.

Brad should just throw money at him until he tells him to stop it.

Yes it is. He's an RFA with only a single season showing him as anything other than a 4th line player. Throwing 10M+ at him? Way too early.

I don't know, I'll have to check Hockeybuzz to see much the capitals are paying Ovie.

I would say a three year deal for $10 million - $3.33 mill per year - would seem like a reasonable approach.

that's the contract that Tyler Johnson and Ondrej Palat got last year. Sorry, I love Bouma, but 3.33/3 is too much for one good season.

I was thinking they could offer him something in the 1.75 a year area until the last month or so... now its gonna be north of 2.

Im gonna wildy guess he gets 2.4 per for 4 years.

Make that three years and I'm down. Don't get me wrong, I freaking LOVE Booms, but as has been pointed out his body takes more punishment than all the rest of the Flames put together. I would be betting that in the fourth year of that contract he's LTIR for 90% of it.

How long was the latest contract Glencross signed? Earlier this season I thought his salary of $2.5-ish million seemed about right for Bouma, but Boums is making a really big case to be paid more.

Mid-$2 million seems like good value now.

2 year $2.5mil bridge deal. If he can prove this season isn't just a fluke, then we can start talking big money.

I really do love Bouma this year.

He will be a UFA in 2 years (I think..not sure though), so you have to buy at least 2 years of UFA time or watch him walk for nothing just as this club should be starting to peak.

Also, he JUST turned 25. As long as he avoids the soft muscle injuries i would suggest he has lots of time in the NHL....the kind of guy you have to have to win with in the league.

Again...in 2 years I'm pretty sure he becomes UFA.

I think this has to be one of those bridge contracts. Give him 1.75 for 2 years, and re-evaluate at that point. We don't know if this is a flash in the pan or not.

At the rate both Bouma's skill and confidence is improving he could easily be a 20-25 goal scorer next year. And when you look at a lot of his recent goals they are not ugly goals - they are goal scorer goals. Because we all saw Boums originally as a crash and banger energy guy - it is easy to under appreciate his improvement and his overall skill set. He is becoming a key player on this team.

I'd give him at least 3x2.5. It's not just the points he brings to the table.

There are other GMs who would pay him that, so you'd have to match it at least.
