So my computer did an automatic update yesterday and now it will not move past start up windows screen in any mode. In safe mode it hangs at aswRvrt.sys
Searching online tells me it's a avast issue. I'm stuck with my knowledge and not sure what to do. I don't have a boot disk. I desperately need the info off that hard drive. Any suggestions?? Can anybody help a jammed surferguy?
I'm not much help regarding your booting issue. Only thing I would say is be careful exhausting your options because I have seen people in the same situation format their system and lose everything.
Depending on what info you need, you can remove the harddrive, put it in an external enclosure, hook it up to another PC and transfer the files over. Then you are free to do whatever the hell you want with the boot issue.

Not sure I feel comfortable doing that myself. Any suggestions to have something like this completed in the short term?
To just copy files off the drive, you can try using a boot cd (if you have another computer to create it). This will allow you to boot, and then view your hard drive contents. If you have a usb drive, you can copy files over to it. There are several boot cds you can download - I've used UBCD and Hiren's.
Here's a youtube video I found that will walk you through the steps. I didn't watch the video, but should be straightforward. May help you decide whether this is something you can tackle yourself or not.
If you want to take your computer somewhere to have this done, I'd imagine any computer repair place would be able to do it for you. Don't know how much it would cost. If you're up in the NW, you can PM me. I wouldn't charge anything.
To actually repair the computer, that will take more effort. Hopefully a repair install would do the trick, but it may require a full windows reinstall, depending on what the actual issue is.
