Default 1 dead, 6 others injured at NYE shooting + 1 dead elsewhere - Somali connection

Calgary's Somali community is mourning after two young men were slain in separate shootings in recent days.

On Friday, a man was found dead in an alley in the northwest community of Rosedale. CBC News has confirmed the victim was Murad Omar, 23. He had been living with his family in Canada for 11 years and had just returned to Calgary from a trip to Africa.

Abdullahi Ahmed, 26, was killed on Thursday in a shooting at a southwest Calgary house party that left six others injured.

Abdullahi Ahmed's death in Calgary shooting worries Toronto Somalis

Calgary police investigate suspicious death in northwest

Imam Abdi Hersy, a leader in Calgary's Somali community, said he is heartbroken by the recent deaths.

Hersy said he's lost count of how many young people from the Somali community have been killed in Alberta in recent years, but he estimates the number to be around 50.

"It's about time. We need to do something," he said. "The community needs help and community is part of Calgary and Alberta. They have to be treated as part of the community."

"How long we can wait until another young victim falls short and his life to be cut short? How long?"

According to Hersy, Omar's mother tried to stop her son from going out the night he was killed because she was worried about the shooting at New Year's Eve party the night before. As he left the house at 1 a.m. MT, Omar insisted he wouldn't go far.
Quote:
Exactly what happened is something Hersi said the Somali community is also at a loss to answer. He said there is only speculation at this point, but some Calgary Somali's feel it was a targeted incident.

"Some bad guys came at the end of the party and they came there with that intent, as far as we consider," Hersi said.

"But we don't know exactly what happened."

Hersi said the local Somali community is saddened and shocked by the death of another of their own.

He confirmed the man killed less than 24 hours later in a Rosedale shooting is also a member of the Somali community.

He said there's "a disconnect" between the Somali community and Canadian society, and pleaded for the co-operation of other community leaders in coming up with a plan moving forward.

Ayliffe wouldn't say if the slain man was known to police, but court records show Ahmed had a rap sheet for drug possession and assault.

One person has died and up to six other people have been injured after a shooting at a New Year's Eve party in the Calgary neighbourhood of Killarney, a source close to the investigation tells CBC.

Police say multiple people with injuries are in various hospitals. One person was listed in critical condition.

Calgary police are on scene at an apparent shooting in southwest Calgary that took place early New Year’s Day.

As many as seven people were shot, including two people left in life-threatening condition, following a shooting at a house party, said Det. Steve Adair.

Police are still looking for the shooter and say it’s unclear at this time whether more than one offender was involved.

At around 5:05 am, CPS received multiple 911 calls about a possible shooting in the 1900 block of 36 St. SW, said Adair.

“Upon arrival, CPS members located five victims with gunshot wounds, both inside the residence and outside. They were subsequently transported to hospital, two of them in life-threatening condition.”

Two additional people also showed up at the hospital on their own, suffering from gunshot wounds “possibly sustained at the same incident,” said Adair.

All of the victims are approximately in their 20s, he said.

He said there were about 50 people in the home at the time, apparently at a New Year’s Eve party.

As more illegal guns make their way into our country we need stiffer penalties for those even caught possessing them. Throw the book at them before the shooting.

This is getting crazy. There is something going on all the time now and its at the point where I no longer attend house parties. Something needs to be done.

Hoping for a speedy recovery for all whom are involved.

Drove past there at just after 6am taking my son to the airport. Place was lit up, a good 15 police cars, couple vans, and I think I saw a K9 unit too. I used to live on that block a couple years ago, totally surprised. Used to be a really quiet neighbourhood considering it's proximity to 17th Ave.

Maybe I have a short memory, but these mass murders (only an attempted mass murder in this case) seem to be happening more and more frequently in this province. Is it the fact that there are a lot more people in this province now? Or is it just a bad coincidence?

A Sun reader was actually blaming it on Nenshi - high density policy.

IMO, however introduced, it's the gun culture. House parties gone bad like this when I was growing up had guys showing up that had an issue with other guys there, and they showed up looking for a fight. Back 15 - 20 years ago, it would result in a brawl with fists. Now, whatever reason, insecurity, looking to be tougher than you are etc, some guy brings a gun, and then just can't resist/is desensitized to using it freely if things escalate.

Not sure the background here, if gang members involved, not a surprise. If just a random act, a little more troubling.

Absolutely. One reason I've lived in it for the last 15 years.

Well I wanted to be an idiot and try and blame Nenshi, but as pointed out, Sun commentators beat me to it. So just had to one up them

The Sun story's first word is "Multpiple" as well, so there's that.

hmmm, curious why this had to be reported, but i suppose the ethnicity of the folks involved just had to be...

There have been quite a number of Somalis killed in the last few years IIRC. I think there was an article on that topic because of the numbers involved. I understand that bringing ethnicity or race into these matters is delicate, but if its part of the motive or story then its understandable.

Came for Little Mogadishu comment, left with it being surprisingly true.

Looks like news are back to 1 critical, not dead. Hope that holds...
