Default Headphone Recommendations

I am looking to get a new pair of headphones for a friend and not sure what is best.

Ideally looking for a quality pair that can be used for travel and recreation. Noise cancelling would be great. I think over-the-ear would be best as he doesn't need a sports pair.

I checked out the selection at Best Buy and was a bit overwhelmed at the selection available.

The Bose demo pair are awesome but not sure I can stomach paying $300 for a pair.

Does anyone own a pair of Bose headphones and if so, are you satisfied with them? Is it really necessary to spend that much to get high quality headphones? And what about Monster? I see them everywhere - are they better than Bose?

I'll leave my opinion of Bose products out of here as I've heard the recent headphones aren't bad.

But as a general rule. stay far, far away from Monster.

Been using the bose noise canceling in ear headphones. Wonderful product. Use it for traveling, mowing the lawn or watching a movie in bed. From an audiophile point of view, they probably don't compare but for purpose built they excel

I only use in-ear headphones and I think Sony Fontopia is the best but I don't know if they still sell them anymore 'cause I haven't seen 'em last time I went to the stores. Second best for me are JVC gummy. Both of those are cheap but great quality. As far as over-the-ear noise cancelling headphones I don't have much knowledge of them and I don't really like them.

I've been using Sennheiser headphones for the last few years, and they've been a quality product. I'm no audiophile though. People who know their audio always seem to say Bose is extremely overrated. I have their speakers in my car, and frankly they are pretty terrible.

If your buddies into stuff that have a lot of bass, FutureShop or Visions has a Tiesto Headset for $100 last time I saw :P.

I just bought a pair of Marshall Majors. They're not noise canceling, but they sound great and aren't too huge and are good for walking around. Cost me about $130 CAD.

If you're not into brand names, read the reviews on the monoprice headphones that go for around $30. Beat out most headphones under $200.

Check out the August EP650. Absolutely fantastic over-the-ear headphones for the price (around $60). I have a pair and love them. Incredibly comfortable. Not noise cancelling though, but they do block out a lot of external sound because of their design.

You are right - the selection is overwhelming. I recently did a fair amount of research on headphones under $100 before settling on my EP650, including buying and returning Bluedios.

Actually, check out this guy's youtube channel before you buy anything. He gives really detailed reviews of lots of different headphones of all price ranges. I found his reviews to be very informative:

I recently picked up a set of PSB M4U 1's off Kijiji for $200, regular $300 in stores, oddly enough at The Source. They are great, can't say enough good things about them. Over ear, built to last, nice carrying case, cable is detachable, designed in Canada.

Bose have a lousy reputation in the audio community because their home speakers use very questionable technology to appeal to the uninformed buyer at initial hearing, they invested heavily in acoustic psychology research in the 70's, wide dispersion sound staging etc that sound better in a crowded store setting and at first listen.
They realized that most buyers will pick their gear within a few seconds of listening in a noisy crowded store and tailored the speakers accordingly.
They also charge three times as much as their gear is arguably worth essentially by pretending they are a high end company, they aim their gear towards a well off but uninformed middle aged market who will not bother to look much beyond the small size and fancy marketing.

Can't say how good their headphones are.

Currently using a set of the Bose Quiet Comfort 25.

The noise cancelling is wicked, even on a noisy turbo-prop plane they cut all sound and you don't have to crank the volume. I was questioning spending $350 on headphones, but they are worth every penny IMO.

Do they even have a good variety of over-the-ear, noise cancelling ones? I had to settle for an over-the-ear, even though I wanted some noise cancelling, I am just not able to use the on-ear style. I picked up a pair of Sony MDR10RBT's for $180 from Memory Express. They're bluetooth, and they work like a charm. I hate being tethered, so they work perfectly for me. I am not an audiophile, so I am content with the sound quality.

I was tempted to try the Monoprice noise cancelling, but decided on the Bose.

Normally, I hate Bose. Overhyped, overpriced. But there's a reason the Quietcomfort noise cancelling get such good reviews. They really are good.
Bought 2 pairs (one for Mrs. Penguin) and can't say enough about how great they are.

For non-noise cancelling, my faves are still Sennheiser.
