I want a new tablet, but I have no idea what to get
I am planning on doing some writing on it and would prefer either a keyboard or a stylus (preferably keyboard) and on the cheaper side (under $400, less is more).
What should I look for?

Many tablets have Bluetooth keyboards that you can connect with the tablet to turn it into a mini laptop of sorts. Belkin is the brand I've used both for the iPad and the Samsung Tablet and they work great.

One charge and I'm good for a week. The case for the iPad one is a little better then the Samsung one, but both are great keyboards.
As for the tablet itself, I found the screen on the iPad easier to read when I was doing more typing, however I prefer the Samsung for document storage and transfer as it isn't as cumbersome. File management seems easier as I don't need an outside app to do it, it has a "My Files" folder where I can store and move around documents much like a normal computer. Also, I think you were one of the ones who mentioned to me about Google Docs and the Samsung Tablet I had came preloaded with links to it and Google Drive and seems to be very Google product friendly.

I've been looking at this ASUS 10.1-Inch Transformer Book
http://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00FXMIXBI/r...g=shopbotca-20
I do need something that I can type on (a decent portion of what I'll be using it for is typing notes) and imagining typing on a 7 inch wide keyboard seems kind of awkward

I love the Transformer, but absolutely hate Windows tablets. Would not get one ever.

If you thought you could get away with a 7 inch tablet, the Asus memo pad is cheap as can be and outstanding value for the $....

I have a Transformer 300T and it is awesome as a laptop replacement. I was swayed to get the Transformer because the keyboard serves as a secondary battery and the keyboard also has a usb.
My only complaint with the 300 is the lack of upgrades to newer Android versions. I would like to be on 4.2 but maybe it has hardware limitations.

Wait a few more weeks for the new Nexus tablet to be released.
It'll be made by HTC and probably around 9".

New iPads are coming out soon, I'd recommend waiting for them. It really sucks when you buy something and a few weeks later there's a new better version.

No. Simply the lack of apps compared Apple or Android.
If that's not important to you, that one you mentioned should be a great tablet

I really like my full windows 8 tablet but it's a work machine. Also made a docking station at home with it do turn it into a full desktop.
I have the dell venue 8 and being able to use it like a computer makes it way more functional than I iPad.

I'm not in any rush. I was planning on getting one near black friday or boxing day, just want to narrow it down to one or two to look for rather than game day research.
I appreciate all the advice thus far.

I've heard good things about the Surface Pro 3. 2 of my cousins have it and they love it. It's almost like being on a laptop/PC.

I recently saw surface 2's on sale for $100 off, I believe the 32 GB version was only $349. Seems like a good choice if you don't need full computer functionality and typing is important to you.

I had an Asus transformer and I had to send it in multiple times for screen repair. I've been so happy with my Surface pro 2
