Default Logitech z-5500 speaker problem

Since many of us seem to be fans of this speaker set, I thought I'd try here first.

Recently the subwoofer in the system emits only a very loud tone noise that drowns out the sound from any other signal. It's not the quiet hum, but a very loud and distinct tone. Like a much deeper and louder version of what a dial-tone used to sound like.

I wanted to see if anyone may have seen or heard of something like this happening in the past with there speaker set.

definitely not 60 cycle hum, I'm pretty sure something inside fried last week when all the power was going on and off.

I'll try taking it apart and seeing if something obvious is the problem, doubtful I'll figure it out, but wanted to know if it's worth going with another logitech system or if it's time to start building my own home theatre.

If I went with a new home theatre, would the logitech satellite speakers work well with a receiver? would I need to purchase a new sub to get the low notes as well?

What do you currently use the Logitech for? I'd start building a proper home theatre system.

You can reuse the satellites and even the center channel as they have the standard speaker wire inputs but they are just tweeters. You will need a new sub since yours is broken. The sub generates all low frequencies and position/placement is pretty unidirectional.

A cheap fix would be to buy a used sub and receiver at Goodwill (Value Village is overpriced nowadays) and try to use them with your existing satellite speakers and center speaker to see if you like the sound.
