Analysis of Flames Systems and Strategy
Hey all,
I couldn't find a thread dedicated to analyzing our team's systems/strategy/gameplay.
This stemmed from wondering where to put this:

Maybe Mikael Backlund’s not on your radar. Unless you’re a Flames fan, there’s not really a reason he should be. He was drafted in the first round, but not super high (24th). He can score, but his numbers last year weren’t jaw-dropping (18 goals, 39 total points). He’s 6’0”, 198 pounds. He’s 25. In a league of elite athletes, he might come off as somewhere around average. According to shot stats, I guess our goalies were lousy on the PK. I'll have to remember to watch for that.

Ortio unfairly gets crapped on in the story. He only allowed one PP goal against in the 9 games he played. It was the other 3 goalies who were bad when shorthanded. Even then, the PK was greatly improved in the second half of the season (just like Backlund).
Also, for those who missed it, yesterday's "Unique Team Traits" feature was on the Oilers: http://www.thescore.com/nhl/news/573273. It's not as flattering as the Flames one.

This is the kind of article I expect to read from a journalist. It's a nice change from the post-game puff pieces and superficial summaries that only reiterate what we all saw/know happened.
I actually learned something. Although my gut told me Backlund was awesome last year, this substantiates it.
If we could get more writers putting out content like this it would really elevate discussion by providing more facts to digest.

Precisely. The writer took note of an interesting (advanced) statistic then went back and watching game film to find the root cause. A perfect blend of the "mom's basement" stat analysis and the "watch the games!" crowd. Plus he tore apart Eberle, which was just great.

Great interview with Baerstchi. Absolutely zero blame on the coaches or any perceived slight/mistreatment. Just know he has to be better and work harder. Sounds like his body is responding better to training. He'll be fine.

Yeah. Great interview. Hopefully the the great attitude results in on ice production too. In rooting hard for the kid.

Heard a quote from Hartley on the FAN today saying that he saw baertschi and he sounded really impressed by how hard he's been working.
Really pulling for baertschi to earn a top six spot out of camp this year and have an awesome full NHL season.
