The NHL draft is one of those has to be right scenarios that sports fans have every year.
You can't ...
* watch with kids
* watch with non hockey fans
* watch with moderate hockey fans
* watch with strong hockey fans that constantly want to ask questions and miss what is being said
Also ... you can't PVR it. Missing part of a hockey game and catching it up is one thing. But I can't stand not knowing how the draft went in real time. Can't be PVR'd
Need Calgarypuck.com up of course, and the Hockey News ... some years I've taken a whole bunch of rankings and put them all on a spreadsheet so I can peruse the possibilities.
Beer ... needed, and the best reason to move the event to Friday night from Saturday morning.
My favourite two drafts both involve decks.
1. Nemisz draft with the Tanguay trade. Was staining my deck with a TV wheeled outside. Took a break for the Flames part of the draft but stained for the rest. Was easy to pay attention doing something mindless.
2. Irving draft with the other Tanguay trade. In Saskatchewan at my cousins' house on a 30C day watching outside on his deck in a hot tub.
What's everyone doing this year?
Anyone going to the draft party? (guessing that would be distracting as hell)

Same as every year. My dad and I in the basement. He'll have the THN magazine in front of him and I'll have Future Considerations and CP opened on my laptop.

since it's in the middle of the night over here, I usually just watch the stream on the internet with a few beers. I have tabs with CP, hockeydb and several draft guides/rankings opened at all time.
too bad that the "one day draft" last year was an exception, I absolutely loved it. Started earlier (9 pm over here I think) and moved swiftly. It was perfect IMO ... absolutely hate the day 2 coverage on NHL Network.

I think you forgot a website
nevermind now I see CP, I panicked!

Used to be THN draft preview while half watching the first round and waiting for the flames pick.
Last two with the flames being bad/picking high I have read every draft preview a few times and watched most of the top guys multiple times before. Just me and the tv, beer sounds like a good idea too. Maybe talk to a couple friends who are really into the flames after the pick on the phone, not many flames fan friends in town now that I live in bc.
After I've seen who the flames picked will spend 10-15 real happy if they get one of bennett, rhino or ekblad, satisfied if they take the other big 4 Draisaitl and convincing myself he'll be decent and thinking about potential trades of our other LWs not named Gaudreau if they take Ritchie. Arrive at CP in full rah rah our prospect will be great mode regardless of pick.
For whatever reason I have often found myself driving during the draft
- Recall going through the DQ on Elbow when the first Tanguay deal was announced.
- I was driving through the community of Crestmount (I think that's the name, the one on the highway coming in on 16th Ave) taking photos (we were trying to land them as a client at the time) for the Chucko draft.
- 2 years ago, we had just had my daughter so getting anytime for something like watching a draft was hard, I took an extra long route to pick up Swiss Chalet as the Flames pick approached - and got quite excited...until they traded down. That blew my plan.
Every year I still have to explain to my wife why it is extremely important that I watch the draft - and watch it without her - she doesn't get it, but she does allow me to do it. Friday night helps. I also have to prepare her for the fact that I will be checking my phone constantly on Saturday and basically be distracted the entire day.

I just basically lock myself in solitary confinement with my T.V., my phone(text only), and my laptop, and cut myself off from human interaction. My wife will knock and leave my dinner outside the door.

That's my wife. She usually talks through whole things and asks questions non-stop. Honestly though, I am just glad she takes an interest in it and doesn't mind watching it.
This year she is working a night shift though, so I imagine that I will get home from work and veg out in front to the computer (I have no cable or satellite) with all the cyber homies.

This was not a ritual, more of a coincidence. When I was younger and the draft wasn't televised, I would end up with my dad out at some grazing land with a couple of .22s, Tahiti Treats, and a couple Mr. Bigs and even though my old man wasn't a hockey fan, he'd turn on the radio and let me listen to the draft while we bonded over lighting up some gophers.
