I was not a fan of the AK-47. I thought it was clunky, inaccurate, and the damn forestock got way too hot when fired for a long lenght of time.
There is no argument thou, that is was a game changer. It was simple, easy to make, easy to use, and seemed to be indestructible. The arming of uneducated/untrained soldiers/persons became a lot easier when this "hit the shelves".

I remember holding an AK 47 in my hands for the first time. It was old and definitely took any sort of romance or luster away from the weapon. An incredibly prolific, cheap feeling killing machine. It was quite the disparity between that and a new handgun which feels substantial and modern.
I liked the AK-47, it wasn't the most accurate rifle in the world but it had killing power and range. It was simple to clean and maintain, but you could drag it through mud and leave it in water for weeks and it would still fire. It was reliable and a soldiers fire arm.
I far preferred it to the Nato adopted rifles of the day.
Sadly it also became the defacto weapons of terrorists around the world due to the above and its cheap pricing.
The design was ingenious though.
During the vietnam war American soldiers would pick the AK up and use it instead of the M-16 due to how bad the first production run of the M-16 was.

The accuracy was too much to over look for me. It is just piss poor, IMO. The C-7 is actually a pretty solid weapon (or the latest instalment).

Yeah the recoil springs on the AK were really stiff the weapon just jumped when you fired it.
I didn't much like the C-7, but to be honest, I was on my way out when it came in so I only got to shoot it a few times, but I like my weapons to feel like weapons.
I was a huge fan of the FN except for its carrying weight. But it had a nice big round with good muzzle velocity and it had a manageable kick, and I really liked the adjustable iron sight on it.
Plus you could strip it and clean it very quickly and the parts were big enough that you could clean it in the dark with the smallest piece being the gas plug
I remember that you could accurately hit things a km away and pretty much shoot through trees and cars to kill people hiding behind them.
you could also make it into a make shift training grenade launcher because the grenade simulators had a hollow on the bottom that could just fit over the barrell, so if you fired a blank with one of those on you could fire the grenade simulator a good 50 yards with good accuracy. Of course if there was a failure to launch you pretty well threw your rifle out of your trench so you wouldn't blow your face off.

Pretty much, I remember having to pack a cleaning kit with my FN, I don't even think there was a cleaning kit for the AK.
I remember doing a evaluation of the C7 for my unit before I left, for the transition, and I took it apart, and thought, man this is stupid and overly hard and that spring that went flying across the room, well that's gone, I wonder if you need it.

RE: UCB, I'm assuming because you were part of western forces (and cause of your age) you already had worked with way better weapons. But yeah, for so many people around the world, it is THE gun. And when it came out, I assume it was technologically superior. They showed it compared to what people were using in WW2 and it sure seemed like a huge leap. And as like you and CC have said, it still has many advantages, not just it's price.
I always liked that part in Lord of War where Nick Cage's character is talking about the AK47. Well the whole movie is good. Cept for Nick Cage... :/ Though, he's not horrible in it.
