Don't the Flames wear their new jerseys tonight? That is about all I'm looking forward to about tonights game. I just wanna see how Backlund responds to the benching and see how the young guys do against a team like the wings.
Not going to predict a score but I will say it should be a fun game to watch!

Actually in retrospect I like the Baertschi scratch and tonight will tell with the Backlund. The quote was Baertschi wasn't playing a 3 zone game and it seemed everyone assumed it was back to his defensive play which had been really good so far this season. I think it was due to his offensive play. He had focused so much on playing well in his zone, as was apparent in the San Jose game where he was shown covering for Monahan, that I think he wasn't paying enough attention to the offensive side of the puck.
Last game I thought Baertschi was stronger on the forecheck, more aggressive with the puck and his creativity was shining more than it had in the last half dozen games. Backlund I think is in the same boat where he has been an amazing 3rd line shut down center but his offense has suffered and the scratching was to help him get his offensive game back.
I'm excited for tonight to see him back in the lineup and see if he can come back with the same gusto that Baertschi did.

Twice Hartley scratched young players and both times they lost. This is the only thing I don't like about Hartley. We are in rebuilding season supposedly and instead of giving the young guys some ice time and learn from their mistakes, he scratched them. I thought both Baetrschi and Backlund were playing well before they got scratched but I guess it was not good enough. I just hope the confidence of these young guys stays high.
As for the goalie, Joey Mac will start against the Wings. So far both goalies are split in games. Like I said before, Hartley is making the goalies earn their start, which I think is good. Ramo let in some bad goals and team lost so Hartley is switching. Now it is time for Joey Mac to get more actions.

Flames edge the Wings by 1 goal. High scoring game though - 6-5!
Interested to see how the Flames do against another strong puck-possession and puck pressure team. I would assume Backlund will be back for this one, and would make sense for him to get the Datsyuk matchup.

I don't like to see young players scratched in a rebuilding season, I get that.
But if this is part of that culture change where we try and avoid raising a new generation of skill players that aren't all that hard to play against then I'm all for it.
Iginla was never good in his own zone, and I think as a captain that just can't happen or people will follow the bad habits.
We heard of Regehr vs Tanguay/Iginla arguments in the room etc for years.
You can't win that way.
If a scratch here or there now develops complete hockey players than sign me up. if it creates sulking and trade demands then likely we're better off without them anyway.

So if Colborne got a ton of icetime against the Leafs, does this mean Hudler is double shifted the entire game?

My sentiments exactly. Scratching a young player doesn't have to be an overly negative comment on their play. Perhaps Backlund might have been sore from a shot block and they figured they'd give him the night off.
If they watch the game from a high vantage point with a guy like Conroy then maybe it becomes a good teaching opportunity to help develop their game a bit more.

No, it does not have to be a bad thing. And there are times when it is completely necessary and definitely the right thing.
But this notion that watching from the pressbox is some kind of new perspective, and a teaching revelation, is vastly overstated.
The guys watch film (i.e. the same view) every single day. They are shown specifically what they are doing well and what they are doing poorly, from above, every day.

Watching film and watching from the press box are entirely different experiences. While it's not worth arguing the merits of, it's pretty hard to brush it off and say "well it's overstated!" when you've got zero point of reference to draw that conclusion from.

I think people would be fine with scratches to send a message if the message was consistent. However, when you have vets who've been much worse with the kids, what message are you sending? Once you make it, then you can coast?
As for tonight ... go Flams. The Wings are playing "ok", lets take advantage.

We have a huge opportunity to not only rebuild the skill set of the team but also the identity and culture. I like that Hartley's holding the young guys accountable and trying to get them all in the same mindset early on. I think it will pay dividends in a few years time having (hopefully) all our key guys playing on the same page.
