The Colbert Report and Bell
Can't believe there isn't more outrage about this. So effing Bell yanks it off CTV and the only way to watch the Colbert Report in Canada now is on Comedy Central. There is no way i'm subscribing to the Comedy Channel.
Why not put the crappy Daily Show on Comedy Central instead?? Idiots!

Is the ability to watch The Colbert Report a right guaranteed in the charter or something? Why should we have the right to demand a show we like be available on regular cable??

Plus, who has cable, but doesn't have the comedy network? I have some lame ass, barely more than basic cable package, and even it has the comedy network.

Colbert, Daily show? Aren't they the same thing?
It's just an American "funny" take on politics.
Who cares?

Well they do have the episodes on the web for free on their website. The week previous with the most recent being the show from the night before.
I have Comedy, so the move didn't bug me. I could see why it'd be annoying, but not sure why there should be 'outrage'.
Cable companies are jerks anyway. Can't wait till things get unbundled. Course, the price will probably go up anyway.

I was had an argument with a friend that these two shows were legitimate new shows worthy of a voice along side other accepted sources of news.
We no longer speak.

Although I get what you are saying, I would argue with the state of CNN and Fox in the States, it's pretty damn close.
I believe Canadian news is much better than the current mess in the States though.
But yeah, they don't sell themselves as news shows, so they shouldn't be sourced as such.

While I understand the frustration, I wouldn't rank this at the top of my list of stupid Canadian telecom decisions.
I gave up trying to watch the daily show and Colbert at a reasonable hour, live and in HD a while ago. I just wait a day and watch it on hulu with Apple TV.

I think to put it simply would be to say these types of shows aren't news, but they do a better job of reporting it than actual news organizations.

What's your opinion on Glenn Beck or Rush Limbaugh's legitimacy as a news source?

They are #######s with an agenda that lack the common sense to know that their show is great comedy to watch.

Makes sense. I too agree with your overall stance that opinions about news aren't "news".
That said, I still find both shows funny, but in small doses. I only catch Daily/Colbert once every 2-3 months.

Oh I never said I didn't find them funny, trouble I only watch them when I can't sleep.

Even as a huge fan I would amend that to say they CAN do a better job reporting the news. Sometimes they do, other times they do not. Sometimes they are way off base. And of course, you don't get the full news cycle. The big thing is they aren't held to the same standard, so that works in their favor. But it also means you have to take it with a grain of salt.
But yeah, as I mentioned with the state of news in the States, it's not a horrible source. Twenty Four hour cable news (esp. in the States) has become more editorializing, opinion, manufactured debate, soapbox yelling, and ratings grabbing trash, than actual news or investigation.
I think the new reality for a news concerned individual in the information age is just to look for a second source on EVERYTHING. If you like a story, or want to know more, look it up in a different spot.
Sometimes even that isn't enough, cause we've seen how news organizations follow each other down the wrong road on incorrect stories or pranks, but I guess you do what you can. Can't fault a viewer for that if they are trying to source something.
It's like the Wikipedia adage. It's a great place to start, and is usually right, but you'd be stupid to quote it directly for anything of importance without following up elsewhere.
Haha, in that comparison, for all the flack Wikipedia gets, it's also far more accurate that CNN or Fox.
