Default So I bought a new house and it has come with some surprises!

Back in May my wife and I purchased a place in Calgary on the west side.

We dove in even though 95% of people would have walked right back out after stepping foot in the door.

The place was a mess, I will call it border line hoarder but not stacked to the roof. Anyway we closed the deal and then had to give 3 month notice to the renters to move. (I can handle the renovations and repairs and we wanted a handyman house)

So the last week of August rolls around and we get a call to bump up our possession as the renters will be out Aug 1. Great!

Well the day we get possession the house is a mess, an absolute mess! The former owner had three guys on site hauling out the renters leave behinds. SEVEN truckloads and a full bin of garbage left this place. It was nasty.

Nothing a crew of friends couldn't handle though, we scrubbed and put in over 150 man hours on the August long just to get the main floor sanitized. We are now moved in and are working on the basement to get it prepped for a buddy to move in.

Well we found that the carpet was ruined due to cat piss, so we tore that out as well as the drop ceiling. When we did that it rained cat #### on us from the joists. Then i swept and scrubbed in behind the furnace where I found another pile of cat ####, this time about the size of a ice cream pail. gross.

Anyway we have a heap of work ahead of us, but we are up for the challenge!

Here is the kicker for everybody who is still reading this long winded story.

This house was a former day home!!!

I was shocked to see the condition of this home and the yard and know it was a day home. The toilet downstairs wouldn't flush and the sink upstairs wouldn't drain. Who leaves their kids at a place like this?

Well today I found out, when at seven am the first of 4 parents showed up to drop their kids off at the "day home". I had to break the news to them that I had bought the house and the day home was no longer there.

The parents were not told the house was sold and that the day home was moving, yet as I was told by each parent they had already paid for August!

I guess the former renters told the parents they would be on vacation from Aug 1-19 and the place was looking "a bit bare" as the landlords were "going to be painting".

So from what I can amass the former renter took off with about 3800 bucks on August 1 and much to my surprise I had some dumbfounded parents to deal with at 7 am today.

The long and short of it, consider this a reminder to take a look around where you are dropping your kids off everyday, this creep is still out there somewhere.

I dearly hope this guy is caught.

I will keep you posted on any more surprises this place reveals.

Ohh and I found a dead bird in the wall.

Hope you got a better deal, it might have been easier (and cooler) to dynamite the place and build a new house.

Freaking cat owners.

This is why I stopped being a landlord...and liking people. People can be such a'holes sometimes.

I'm kidding about not liking people. I like 95% of people.

Are those parents planning on calling the cops to report the fraud? If so, help them out with what information you have or come across in the house.

Easy Crunch, I am a cat owner. I dont let her poop in the joists, that is just bad etiquette.

I am working to get info from the old owner. Had some mail show up today but the neighbors have told us that upwards of 15 ppl lived in the house!

Man I've been watching this story unfold on twitter and damn, you have the patience of a saint surferguy. Hopefully this is the last of the surprises you're gonna get out of that place... unless you find a vintage guitar/painting/bags of money packed into the walls.

Given what has happened so far, I would expect it to be drugs instead. Or at best, drug money.

So uhmmm, why did you purchase the house in the first place? Did you get a severely reduced price?

You know... I had a moving company out in July who told me an epic move they had to do that week. 10 trucks, moving an entire hoarder's pile from one house to the next. Completely occupied one of the major moving outfits in town. The new house had stuff piled to the ceiling in rooms with a walkable path etched into this wall of crap. Wonder if it's connect to your mess...

I went through a very similar thing with the house I'm finishing up in terms of the renos. It'll feel good once you're closer to finishing.

Did you not do a walk through 24 hours prior and request a hold back for all the stuff left behind?

Good luck and hopefully the parents can get their money back. I cant see it being too difficult!

I was in a $3.75M home recently and the owner had 7 rescue dogs (5 German shepherds), and 8-12 birds flying around loose in his home. Some of them were wild sparrows or something that just flew in one day. Bird #### everywhere. He had seven guns hanging on his wall (couple rifles, 12 gauge, two pistols, and what looked like maybe an AK47 and M4). Asked him what he did for a living and he told me he was a serial killer.

Bunch of odd people out there doing some strange ass things in their homes.

We got a good price on it and we are in the community we wanted to be in. I knew what I was dealing with in terms of the garbage and filth. I was more surprised by the day home aspect of it and then to find out that they had run a scam on the parents.

I am not scared of the renos, just needed to get through the initial clean and now onto making the home ours. It will be a battle but I will definitely put my personal stamp on this place. Im stoked.

The former owner understood the condition and sent his crew of three dudes over to clean out the rubbish from the house/lot. They put in about 30 hrs to get that done for us.
