Calgary lowest in desirability for UFAs?

30. Calgary Flames
Why on earth would I do this to myself over the next three years or whatever? Team isn’t going to win for awhile, the old building just flooded and wasn’t a palace to begin with, and it’s cold as s**t there in the winter. Nice city in the right season or whatever, but…why? Seriously, why would I choose Calgary?

Given this team is in a rebuild mode, I imagine we'll get the Oilers treatment for the next little while for UFAs.

Yup. The best way to avoid the Edmonton treatment will be through trade. Granted i am not sure what we can trade to stop it?

Why would you come here? Hmm $ and ice time would probably be a couple tangibles.

We shouldn't be wasting our time with overpaid UFA's during this early rebuild anyways.

We don't need free agents at this point, so the feeling is mutual.

As we just saw on July 5th, even teams close to the cap were still handing out big money for UFa's that could play top 6. The veterans that Calgary can probably get are the ones that are not really top 6 players but will have a chance at top 6 on a bad team.

Based on the way he broke all the cities down it's kind of hard to argue against it. He's assuming you're an established player getting equal dollar offers from all 30 teams, can anyone really make an argument for putting Calgary much higher? The only thing I'd dispute is that the winters really aren't that cold.
Here's the correct link

Considering some of those UFA "jackpots" we "won" in the past (Bouwmeester)...Good.
This is also likely why management has been targeting so many Calgarians recently.

Am I the only one that the link doesn't work for? Comes up with something on Chiarelli.

Well my only argument is some players would much rather player where the game means something. Stuff like being front page of the sports section every day, getting recognized on the street, sellouts every night, etc. surely means something to some players. I hope anyways.

True but we are going to need some "good winning veterans" after this year. I don't see Cammi , Stempniak or Stajan on the team after the deadline. Unless they think Hudler and Glencross is good enough going forward. Glencross will also be going into his final year after this year. I am not convinced that he will want to re-sign. At that point he could be looking at 6 years out of the playoffs.

Statement of the obvious? That will change in three or four years, when the Battle of Alberta returns to levels close to what it was in the 80's. Calgary and Edmonton will be the most desirable places because they have a lineup filled with skilled players and are best positioned to win. It's all cyclical and the free agents will return.

Calgary has always been a harder sell due to the climate and relative islolation. If you don't have "winning", it becomes all that more difficult.
Ultimately, I do believe that winning and money are the 2 biggest factors, and right now we only have one of those. Iginla helped temper the "not winning" aspect a little, since as long as he was there, you knew the Flames were trying. Now that he is gone, we can't even pretend anymore.

Which still puts Calgary at what, 10th at best?

There are also players from this area who are happy to come home e.g. Corbin Knight. Actually there are lots of reasons to choose Calgary (or any other team for that matter) - winning and weather are probably not among them at the moment
