Default Feaster's post draft media scrum

Main points I got from it:

  • acknowledged WHL heavy prospects again, but pointed out drafted from OHL, QMJHL, Russian junior, and college
  • there were a lot of deals that could have been done... 1st round picks for players that are 1 or 2 years away from UFA... not the way to do a rebuild
  • heard a lot of chatter about teams trying to jump in front of Flames or what players other teams were interested in... were pretty pleased they got Monohan at 6
  • had a lot inqueries about 1st round picks... but are 1 or 2 years away from Free Agency, management group felt that was not the way to do a rebuild
  • plans to sign Monahan right away and compete for a spot on the team
  • will take a look at signing Poirier and Klimichuk ... rather sign them sooner than later
  • thought the mini combine they held was helpful.. allowed Gelinas, Pringle, and Conroy to meet with prospects
  • invited 4 players to the mini combine... drafted 3 of them (Petan is reportedly the 4th)
  • still thinks there will be trade activity once some of the bought out players get signed
  • already have drawn up a UFA list
  • doesn't feel UFAs will fill all the holes on the team, but still need to be able to compete, maybe won't be active but will be strategic
  • won't comment on Lecavalier
  • started process to qualify RFA will finalize on July 2nd... some decisions on RFAs depeneded on what happened this weekend
  • on Shinkaruk: doesn't matter that he was from Calgary they were going to stick to their list

That sticks out to me.
RFA: Backlund, Butler, Brodie, Cundari
Be interesting to see what offers will be given and if one or two of these guys are traded. Frankly the only one I'd wanna see go is Butler..

Not a Feaster hater, but I admit that I was worried that he would take some shortcuts.

He didn't. And he did a very good job today.

Feeling much better about the rebuild than I was prior to today.

I sincerely hope Butler is traded, and that Backlund, Brodie and Cundari are re-signed. The rest of their RFAs can walk.

edit - oops, missed Breen and Bouma, both should also be re-signed.

He tried though. Offering for Schneider.

This is 3 close calls now. Richards, O'Reilly and Schneider. Is he out yet?

I overreacted to the 22nd pick. Would have liked him to traded down but Montreal prob would have snapped him up.

Feaster's presser puts me at ease. Going to do this right, and this is terrific news. Please sign Backlund, Brodie, and Cundari ASAP!

You have no idea what he offered for Schneider, so give it a rest already, please.

edit - Here you go.

Quote:
All weekend long, the talk was that the Edmonton Oilers were zeroing in on Schneider, and indeed sources told ESPN.com that the Oilers and Canucks met at Vancouver’s hotel on Friday night to discuss the parameters of a possible deal. But the asking price was always too high for Edmonton’s liking: the Oilers’ first-round pick (the seventh overall) plus a prospect and a player to be named. Higher asking price for trading within a division was the Canucks’ thinking. And you can see that.

The Philadelphia Flyers nibbled early on Schneider but didn’t go far down that path. The Calgary Flames got a call, as well, but they didn’t want to give up the No. 6 overall pick as part of a deal. The Columbus Blue Jackets, at the time unsure they could sign Sergei Bobrovsky, also danced a little with Vancouver on Schneider. But, in the end, it was New Jersey winning out.
http://espn.go.com/blog/nhl/post/_/i...move-surprises

Now lay off the guy.

Rochards and ROR were before management admitted they had not been intellectually honest about the state of the franchise.

I don't see trying to acquire a #1 goalie in Schneider as a shortcut unless it meant giving up the #6 pick or both of #22 and #28 to acquire. Landing a #1 goalie who is not post-apex is part of rebuilding is it not??

might as well put this here; Tod Button interview. Briefly describes the rankings to help understand the three players in the "top 13"

boy they would have looked really dumb then, if one of those players wasn't available would not have they?

unless, of course, they had a number of jerseys, with a number of players names on them, since the draft is fluid, and as far as I know at least, Feaster et al are not prescient...

Nice touch, I also like the "top 13 thing", and the "best player in the draft 10 years from now" thing with Jankowski.

It's not about us, or to boast to other teams, its for the prospects' confidence.

or they would have just given a velcro nameplate if someone unexpected came up?

And waste a custom made jersey? Nah...better to sink or swim with the all the effort in scouting they put in.

According to Jay, the organization hit on 3 of the top 13 on the their scout's boards, so they ought to be pretty good right?

Well that makes sense then, they didn't have a Shinkaruk jersey, what were they supposed to do? (Green text implied)

Edit: I find the Jerseys with nameplates classy. Shows they "got their guy".
