Default Devices (Phones) Not Acknowledged By Computer

This has been pissing me off for years. Why is it that half the time I plug a phone into a computer, it does not show up in My Computer? I remember this being annoying 5 years ago with my BB. Now I've gone through at least 5 phones, and it's still a problem. I currently have an iphone and an Android, and it still happens with both of them. And my computer is brand new. WTF?

My iPhone 5 shows up under "My Computer"- running Windows 7.

I wonder if having iTunes installed has something to do with it.

Sometimes, on some phones, you actually need to go into your phone settings and manually engage USB mode. I had a similar issue with my devices, and found that engaging USB mode allowed my computer to recognize the device.

The thing is, it works half the time or more. I just have to unplug it and try again a few times. Am I the only person this happens to? Why doesn't Jesus love me?

3rd party cable? My $3 lightning cable from Hong Kong will charge my phone 97% of the time, but it will only let me browse my files 1/2 the time.

I guess the one I'm using for my android might be third party, but my iphone cord is a legit iphone cord. And it will charge the phone 100% of the times I plug it it, but only half the time the computer will let me open my pictures.

You usually have to turn on "mass media mode."

Does the problem manifest on more than one machine, using the same cable?

Wait, are you claiming that iTunes actually made something on your computer better? Or are you saying 4x4 might have iTunes installed, and thus something has broken? I only want to "thank" your post if it's the latter, as iTunes is the progeny of Satan Herself and I refuse to believe any benefits it might allegedly evoke.

Oh, and as regards the original question - I find if I disconnect and reconnect a phone a couple times, it will eventually show me a drive letter. I assume it's because of sunspots.

No, iTunes never makes anything better. However having iTunes installed lets the device know that the cycle of evil is complete; and it can now appear to function normally; while it is really sucking the lifeblood out of you.

In all seriousness, I used to think iTunes was all evil. Then whenever I started using iTunes I would think to myself "how would I design a program if I was bat-crap crazy?" I find it work much better that way- as long as I only try to use it as Apple intended and remove any independant thought.

I pay Rdio $10 a month for the privilege of not using iTunes. And I've bought a lot of music on iTunes. It's gotten that bad, especially version 11.

What ports are you using on your PC?

Sometimes the ports coming off the headers on the motherboard to the front of the case have cheap wiring or cheap connectors and will charge but won't correctly initialize mass storage. I also found that USB 3.0 ports are hit and miss and some motherboards have special USB 3.0 charging modes that allow them to charge devices faster by providing more power but won't allow them to act as mass storage devices if this option is activated either in the BIOS or motherboard software.

Try a built in USB 2.0 port on the back of the motherboard rather than a port on the front of your case to troubleshoot if any of the above really is the issue.
