Wildrose fined $90,000 for breaking phone rules
http://www.calgaryherald.com/news/Wi...821/story.html
“This is highly regrettable. This is not something we knew we were doing,” he said. “This was not something malicious here.”
If they can't figure out their own campaign rules, do you really want them running the province?
In my opinion that's not big enough of a fine for cheating cheaters who like to cheat.

They never said they didnt know the calls were happening, just that the content didnt follow CRTC guidelines.
Robocalls are still entirely legal and a part of all parties campaigning.
I mean the PC's have a pretty good idea about how well they can work when the Justice Minister for Alberta owned and operated a company that provides that very service..
Quote:
Progressive Conservative MLA and Justice Minister Jonathan Denis said he has no issues with political parties using automatic calls, as long as federal and provincial rules are followed. Everyone has to abide by those same rules, he said.
Everyone has to abide by those same rules, said Denis, who was co-founder and president of 3D Contact Inc., a polling and consulting firm.

But I agree...they all suck.

Wow that is a massive fine. I cant believe that the CTRC didnt at least warn them at some point before giving out a fine of that size.

Yeah, but they still aren't following the rules, which they now claim they know about. The call is supposed to be identified in the call display as to whom it is coming from. There is nothing that says it's the WRP - it says "unknown" and just lists the number. We know it's the WRP because we googled the number and found reports of who it is.
I don't care who makes them - they suck.

I dont think the call display has to identify who is "calling", that info has to come at the beginning of the message.

This isn't a campaign rule; it was a CRTC one.
Nenshi's campaign used the same tactic in their push-polling calls.
Redford in her leadership campaign.
And Redford and the PC's in the general election.
http://www.sunnewsnetwork.ca/video/f.../1535189478001
At about the 10 minute mark Carter admits the call was from the PC's and not identified as such.

When you answer the call do they not say they are calling from the Wildrose?

I must be pretty lucky (or live in lopsided ridings) cause I have never gotten robocalled. I'd be curious to know how effective they actually are. Actually what I really wanna know how much/if they actually hurt the robocalling party.

I don't really understand why anyone would answer a call from a number displayed as "Unknown". It's obviously going to be spam.
At this point, I don't answer any call that isn't already someone in my address book. If actually is someone I know they'll leave a message.
Or contact me in one of the half dozen better ways to get ahold of me (email, text, FB etc).
I can't imagine how political parties think robo-calls are a good idea in today's society.

Neither do I.
The point being though, that Minnie is claiming they are " still" breaking this law.
Unless she actually answers the call she can't know if they are or not.

As to the comment "do you really want them running the province"?
Seriously, the Wildrose has a long ways to go to match the general stupidity, incompetance, arrogance, child like behaviour and corruption of the governing PC party in their leader.
So if this is really the only thing that comes up between now and the next election, and if Redford is still running the party at that time. Then absolutely I would rather have them in government then team needs to rebuild.
And yes Robocalls suck and are annoying, these parties need to get with the times and start flooding email.

Maybe her friends are still getting called? Doesn't have to be her directly.

She seemed to be speaking of firsthand experience, but even if we extend what she said to friends it still doesn't clarify if they are "still" breaking the law which is....
The rules regulating unsolicited phone calls says that automated calls must start with a clear message telling the listener who paid for the call. That message must state the name of the sponsor, their mailing address and a local or toll-free number where the person or group can be reached. If the message lasts more than 60 seconds, it must be repeated at the end of the call.
It refers to the message itself, not the call display on the phone.

You don't have to though.
Political parties, constituency associations and candidates are exempt from using the National Do Not Call list, but most parties have their own DNC list.
Here is the link to register on the Wildrose DNC.
