Default Wreck City - April 19-27

Does anyone remember the house on 10A street in Hillhurst that the new owner let a bunch of artists go into and do their thing before it was demolished for the new build? Rooms radically altered with art, a slide down to the basement and all sorts of cool things came out of the project.

Now imagine that but instead of one house it is an entire block of 9 house, 3 garages, and 1 greenhouse getting the treatment before Bucci demolishes them for Ven in Sunnyside (new condo development). You get Wreck City.

http://wreckcityproject.wordpress.com/

Quote:
WRECK CITY: An Epilogue for 809 is a community-based art experiment transforming 9 houses, 3 garages, and a greenhouse scheduled for demolition into temporary art, installation, and performance spaces. The biggest project of its type in the history of Calgary (perhaps even all of Canada), Eight Artist-Curators have invited 100+ Artists, Musicians, and Performers to participate. Artist participants will be free to radically alter the architecture of entire houses, re-shaping the homes using materials from the houses themselves, without need for repair at the end of the project. This newly formed community of artists intends to produce a neighbourhood of magical and critically-engaging spaces, made possible only by the freedom of working inside houses soon to be destroyed.
The project is well underway and it will all be open to the public between April 19-27:

WRECK CITY will be Open to the Public from April 19 – 27!

Opening Reception: Friday, April 19th 7pm-11pm

Open House Hours:
Mon – Thurs: 4pm-8pm
Friday: 7pm-11pm
Saturday: 1pm-11pm
Sunday: 1pm-5pm
Our last day will be Sat April 27th.

We're definitely going to go and check this out, we loved the art house last time and this should be really cool on this even larger scale incorporating more artists.

Why not? It's a whole bunch of artists getting together to use the houses slated for demolition as their canvas'. Does the fact that it is temporary not allow it to be art?

Or perhaps I am ignorant of the true meaning of art and you can enlighten me?

I think he means that his shoes might get wrecked while viewing this art, so it is not accessible to the general public.

I've never been, does Wreck beach have a bunch of art installations on it (permanent or temporary)?

But 'Interior Semiotics' was classified as art too. And it wasn't.

Seed planted.

Good night.

I disagree. The things I've seen there made me question why the water had to be so cold as well. Seemed rather redundant, as the visuals had the same effect.

There is a certain type of poster peter's trolling works on.

Bigtime is not one of them.

I live right across from these houses- this certainly sheds some light on what's going on over there.
I guess I should stop scowling at "the hipsters who are defacing private property"
