Default 3 Canadian youths involved in Algeria gas plant attack

There was a thread on this back in January but didn't really get any discussion since the details weren't released until this week.

Two were directly involved in the attack and died in it (blew themselves up), while the third (Yoon) was arrested last year in a neighboring country and is currently locked up on terrorism charges there, and thus, did not participate in the attack. He went over to Africa with the other 2, and I'd bet a lot of money he would have been with them, had he not been arrested.

I think a lot of people are struggling with this one since it was essentially just 3 high-school buddies, 2 of which were Christian and converted to Muslim due to the third friend. They look like everyone I went to highschool with, and not your stereotypical terrorist every thinks of.

I am not awaiting the discussion that occurs once the arrested party is released and wants to return to Canada.

Looks like the third one should have been monitored. If he was able to convert two of his friends, he's likely the ring leader and the one with the most extremist views. I read he was the charming one of the group, while the other two were more withdrawn.

All it takes is one to poison the minds of others. Then groupthink takes over, especially on impressionable youth.

I hope they find the chicken hawk responsible for convincing this kids to throw away their lives. Guaranteed some middle aged man convinced these kids to die in an operation he was unwilling to carry out himself.

I believe the RCMP/CSIS is indeed talking about a 3rd party involved that might still be in Canada.

Thats gotta be some intense brainwashing to convince a nerdy Othodox Greek and a Korean football player to be Islamic terrorists.....

Kids are impressionable. Take a look at any internet forum for issues like global warming, the middle east, etc... You'll see how vehement people can be when they are allowed to express their true feelings under the guise of anonymity.

Edit: Those pictures were also taken 6-7 years ago. A lot can change between age 17 and 24.

Bingo. A lot of these idiots love telling other people to do it, but won't do it themselves. Can't believe there's naive people out there that fall for that crap.

We should also change the title. Yoon was not involved in the attack in Algeria. He was arrested on in Algeria on terrorism charges in December of 2011.

Quote:
It appears Yoon had no role in the Algerian gas plant attack by militants linked to al-Qaeda in January of this year, in which his two former classmates, Ali Medlej and Xris Katsiroubas, died. When the attack happened, Yoon was already behind bars in Mauritania
Before his arrest, Yoon attended a religious school in Mauritania, reportedly with Americans and Europeans, studying the Qur'an. Yoon, was raised a Catholic, but he converted to Islam a year before graduating from London South Secondary School.

See the OP, I mentioned Yoon was not involved, but dollars to donuts he would have been had he not been arrested last year on terrorism charges.

The title says:

Quote:

Yoon wasn't involved in the attack. Although it may or may not be true that he would have, had he not been arrested first, that's not what the title says.

Who knows what his involvement was, maybe he got arrested buying supplies or trying to cross the border to Algeria. He went over with the 2, so until I hear otherwise, he was in on the plan with the other 2 that didn't get arrested. He didn't murder innocent civilians, but he is likely just as guilty as the others

Contextually he was involved. Seems like he was far enough into this tragedy to make it appropriate.

They were investigated back in 2007. I wonder what they were up to back then and if this could have been prevented.

Most of the time I see news stories about people that age, they just call them "men". If they were killed as tourists, I really doubt the headline would be calling them youths. The only time I see it used is in criminal cases where they try to downplay the responsibility of the person that committed the crime by implying their age was the issue.

At age 18 you can vote and you will be charged as an adult for criminal behaviour, I believe you cease to be a youth at that age.

Of course he had no idea

Quote:
Aaron Yoon, a London, Ont., man who went overseas with two high school friends who later perished participating in a militant attack on an Algerian gas plant, has told CBC News he is shocked to hear his friends were killed.

"It's more of a shock to me than it is to you and any other people that know them," he said.

Asked what had happened that led Medlej and Katsiroubas to become associated with militants, Yoon said: “ I have no idea. I have been in prison. In reality, I don't really care because I care about my own self.
What a guy. I cannot wait till people start rallying to get the gov't to "get him home". Gag me
