Language Police Back Off - Quebec is sometimes embarrassing as heck
While they government did back off on this one, the examples in the article are just.... wow
http://news.nationalpost.com/2013/02...taurants-menu/
EDIT:
My favorite part of the article is the line below, I get what they are saying, it just seems totally thrown in last minute as it doesn't jive, it just made me laugh is all.
"In Calgary alone, at least 50 restaurants serve “poutine” rather than “cheese-and-gravy fries.”"

That is ridiculous. I could care less if I went into a Italian, French, Indian etc restaurant and the entire menu was in that language. The fact that the owner in the first example explained every dish in french but kept the name of the dish in Italian and was still fined is funny. Whats even funnier is that they have people out patrolling this stuff.

With the way they are operating, it is completely inevitable.

In 2000, an Indian restaurateur was threatened with a $7,000 fine for giving customers cardboard coasters imprinted with the phrase “Canada’s No. 1 selling British ale.”

When I lived there I believe the requirements were on any billboards or advertising French has to be at least 70% of it (in terms of space), and with any menus they must be in French definitely, and that other languages can be used but French must be at least 50% of the space. Intolerance of others is probably not the best way to try and get tolerance from others.

Restaurants who serve shredded cheese and gravy on fries and call it Poutine should be fined.

If I ever become the premier or Alberta, I would set up a language police too. But I would ban only the use of French anywhere in the province.

Actually I've now realized its not Freedom Kissing they'd advocated for, it was the Liberty Lip Lock. I wish I could say I made that up, but I'd rather go with God Bless America instead.

That's real progressive of you. We should probably look into eugenics as well.

It's funny until you think about how much this costs Canada every year.

I don't know how true this is, I honestly don't, so don't bash me for this.
But I heard from someone that a long time ago, Quebec tried to make a deal with Ontario, saying that if Ontario became officially bilingual, that Quebec would do the same. Ontario said no, and Quebec f***ed off.

The finest use of $25 million ever, well outside of giving a million away to 25 people to create new millionaires....
