"Frankenstorm" : Hurricane Sandy

Not seeing a thread on this, only some convo in weather thread.

This could be the biggest storm in a hundred years, so I felt it should have it's own thread.

-600 miles across, so days of destruction instead of hours.

-some places to get 6ft or more in less than 36 hours

-millions expected to be without power

-Big flooding in New Jersey / New York expected. Atlantic City already almost completely under water

-7 meter waves even expected in EASTERN great Lakes




The scope of potential damage is staggering

I'm glad that it appears everyone is taking this so seriously.

I have a gut feeling that it won't be as devistating as expected (although the flooding is leading me to start thinking otherwise) which would be great however could negatively impact futre evacuations.

The US definitely doesn't need anymore of this. NYSE got shut down as well. Crazy.

Ridiculous how many young children with their parents gawking on shore instead of evacuating.

All governors and the President declaring states of emergency; imploring people to heed their warnings and yet idiocy abounds.

It's crazy to think that pretty much everything from Baltimore to Boston is completely shut down. I can't even imagine what it would be like if the power goes out for 3 days. 60 million people without electricity would be scary.

Power is expect to be out possibly for weeks in some areas

I think the difference between this and Katrina is the water should retreat a lot faster, right?

I remember being chased by Hurricane Irene last year (we were doing a roadtrip-honeymoon up the coast, of all things), and having to wait it out in a hotel in New Hampshire for a couple of days. Dusty Hill was staying in the same hotel funnily enough. That didn't seem to be half the storm this one has the potential of being in terms of impact, and I remember that one being pretty fierce...even though by the time it reached us it had lost some of it's strength.

I hope people take it seriously. Even if it doesn't end up being all it's cracked to be, you're always better off laughing it off after the fact, as opposed to risking your life on a crapshoot. There's not much you can do once a flood hits.

Biggest difference between then and now is then there were disagreements as to how severe it would be, and this time all authorities and meteorologists are in agreement.
