As much as I think the restaurant itself is over rated, the Olive Garden has killer lasagna.

My mother's.
Seriously, I have never had any lasagna at a restaurant that was better than, or even close to, home cooked.

Aside from mom's (I am italian)
Abruzzo downtown (4th ave 8th st) is one of the best Italian restaurants in Calgary. Prego in Eau Claire is not far behind.

Nick's is my son's benchmark so we'll go there if no one convinces me otherwise

Chiantis is good and best of all you can do it as cheaply as possible.

it's been years since I've been there, but Matador Pizza and Steak house had great food, including their lasagna. However, it may be a childhood memory that would no longer meet expectations

Still there, still great food. It's larger now than when I was a kid (back in the 70s, 80s). Loved it then, still love it now, though don't get there much any more. I also agree that Nick's has great lasagna, and both Nick's and Matador are great family restaurants.

Mitilini's is really good. I think it is owned by the same people at Matador's but I could be wrong.

I don't think he's ever been to a true Italian restaurant so I'm leaning that way . I just need one that can deal with my gluten freeness

I always found Nick's to be an incredibly poor imitation of lasagna. This is a while ago, but lasagna noodles, meat sauce and cheese baked on top does not make lasagna. No bechamel, no ricotta, barely anything resembling layers.

Didn't want to say anything, but having worked there I would have to agree.

A lot of you are saying their mothers. My mom's lasagna sucked... which is probably why I grew up not liking lasagna.
However, my wife's lasagna is another story. Her's is the only lasagna that I'll eat.

Fair enough, but I don't think many family restaurants can make it like mom, and keep the cost under $20.
