Default Top Shelf Prospect Report on the Flames

High guys, you might remember my stuff around the NHL draft.

Well for the summer I'm going team by team through NHL prospects, and today I did Calgary. Hope you like it.

Bartschi may be listed at only 5’10″, but he is a tenacious forward who is relentless in puck pursuit and forechecking. He is also a courageous player who is not afraid to take a hit to make a play and is not afraid to go to the dirty areas of the ice to score goals.
This.

This really stood out to me more than anything else about Baertschi in his call-up to the Flames. In fact, every one of his goals was from the so-called "dirty area".

Great writeup Commandant. Gaudreau was definitely a no-brainer for the sleeper. Other than Gaudreau I'd probably have to give that spot to Ramage since all of the Flames brass is high on this kid. It's basically the consensus that he's more than ready for the pro game, but he's content on pursuing his educational goals. I just hope his heart is with the Flames and not elsewhere.

I was definitely looking at Ramage as the potential sleeper, but you are right, I just couldn't overlook Gaudreau. He's just a step above and had a great year on a great team at BC.

Ramage though is ready to make the jump to the AHL like you say. He might not bring huge offence, but the guy can play shutdown D in the NCAA and he's ready for the next challenge IMO. Sometimes kids don't wanrt to leave that environment though. I know Montreal has the same issue with Danny Kristo.

Today as Iginla is entering what surely is the twilight of a long and illustrious career, a new stud Right Wing is ready to join the Flames. Sven Bartschi came up late in the season as an emergency recall from Portland of the WHL and wowed the Calgary faithful scoring 3 goals in 5 NHL games. The Flames and their fans certainly hope they have found the heir to the throne of terrific Calgary Flame Right Wingers
Huh. I didn't know Baertschi was a RW as well. When did he play that (as far as I'm aware, he was pretty well a LW in Portland)?

He's a left handed shot, and plays mostly left wing.....but he's stated before that he can play either wing.

I've seen him in both spots over the last two years.

The story writes better as a RW, though I guess it could work as just a winger.

With Hudler, tanguay, and possibly Cammalleri on the left side, he would play RW in a healthy flames lineup.

He played RW when he was called up on the flames.

Could have sworn he played LW on the Baertschi - Nemisz - Kostopoulos line.

most of the tentative lineups have sven alongside glencross, which could be very good for glencross, who has the ability to be a very hard working player but is sort of inconsistent with that aspect of his play. Sven doesn't seem like he knows how to float around at all, and it could be inspiring for glencross and they could be quite the puck possession line.

Along with 3 other people I started the site lastwordonsports one year ago.

You can see all the writing at the site. My name is Ben Kerr, and I do this part time as a hobby. I work as a lawyer in my day job.

All in the last four months.... our site has been featured in links by Puck Duddy, articles were tweeted out and called, "An Excellent recap of NHL offer Sheets. History of NHL Offer Sheets" by Craig Button...we've been tweeted by Seth Rorbaugh, Penguins beat writer in the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, Tommy Mula founder of the "Hartnell Down" charitable foundation.... my scouting reports have been quoted on thehockeywriters, and by Eric Smith Blue Jackets Beat Writer on Hockeybuzz... I've been interviewed on the Blue Jackets "Fire the Cannon" radio show. We've been linked to in Mirtle's Blog Roll and Kukla's Corner and have been featured in stories written by Mike Boone of the Montreal Gazette and Hockey Inside/Out. Brett Kulak also tweeted out one of our articles.

In non hockey articles, we've had pieces tweeted by Don Landry of the Fan590, James Sharman of the Score, Bob Young owner of the Hamilton Tiger Cats, Drew Edwards Hamilton Tiger Cats Beat Writer, along with players Belton Johnson and Willie Pile of the Argos, Dee Webb of the Tiger Cats, and Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors.

why be snippy, it was an honest question. If someone has credentials, it adds value to their word.

It's expected that Hudler fits onto the right side.

Tanguay, Cammalleri, Comeau and Glencross fit on the left.
Iginla, Hudler, Jackman and Stempniak fit on the right.
Baertschi and Cervenka can play both wings.

Sorry, I thought you were being snippy with me, I must have read something in your tone that wasn't there. Happens on the internet.

I apologize and editted out the snippy remark at the end.

I've mainly seen Hudler on the left in Detroit but if the plan is Right Wing in Calgary he can go there.

Is there talk of using Cammalleri or Cerevenka at Centre?

Some of both. Backlund, Jones and Stajan will be the other centers, but the club doesn't have a lot of guys who can eat the minutes AND take draws well.

Would have been nice to go into a little more depth on all our prospects. Looked like a copy and paste of at least 100 other calgary flame prospect internet articles.....

I assure you its not a copy and paste.

But I am covering all 30 NHL teams, so that means I'm gonna look at the top 2 or 3, and not all of them.

Considering I also previously did 4 or 5 draftees for calgary, there is info on anywhere from 4-10 prospects given on any team.

The thing is we're still a young site, and as I said this is not a full time job, so covering 20 guys per team is just not possible. As I continue to write and the database continues to grow, you'll be able to find more info on more prospects.
